Demetrius B. Zema, S.J., director of the Shrine of Our Lady of Martyrs here. Statue honors the memories of St. Isaac Jogues, first saint to be martyred on American soil. - Text transcribed from caption: TEN COMMANDMENTS IN IROQUOIS #S-3447 BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- The Rev. David Munroe Cory, pastor of Cuyler Presbyterian church, points to the first of the Ten Commandments as it is translated into Iroquois. Dr. Cory learned the difficult language after a large group of Mohawk Indians settled in Brooklyn and became his parishioners. Many Iroquois words contain 18 letters, some have 30. - Text transcribed from caption: BAPTIST RETIRE CHAPEL CAR #S-3420 CHICAGO, Ill. -- Chicago’s Baptists have bidden farewell to one of the last vestiges of a vanishing era in American life--a “chapel” car. A historic relic of Frontier Christianity, the “church on wheels” owned by the Northern Baptist Convention was on exhibition here before making its last trip to the convention’s assembly ground at Green Lake, Wisconsin. Known as “Grace” the car contained pulpit, organ, pews for 65 worshippers and a three-room apartment for the minister and his family. - Text transcribed from caption: RETURNING TO CHINA MISSION FIELD #c-3265 SAN FRANCISCO -- The Rev. Herbert F. Vandenberg (left), of Chicago, and the Rev. Vincent D. Smith, of Milwaukee, Wis., are shown in their stateroom on the S.S. Lakeland Victory before its departure for China where they will resume their mission work interrupted by the war. The Vincentian priests, two of a group of four, are returning to Yukiang, remote part of Kiangsi province, 400 miles southwest of Shanghai. When the Japanese occupied the region they fled to the hills. They arrived back in this country after five months of walking, hitch-hiking, and sailing. Spessard, a missionary, was the only American woman to serve in the Philippine Army during the struggle for liberation, it has just been revealed in Mania. She was commissioned a second lieutenant with the guerilla forces at Kiangan and served as an army nurse. She is now in Manila to secure relief supplies for the people she used to nurse. - Text transcribed from caption: #760 LONDON MISSIONARY SOCIETY OBSERVES 150TH ANNIVERSARY The 150th anniversary of the London Missionary Society was observed in the British Capital with a week of special meetings. Since its founding in London during September, 1795, the Society has commissioned 1,800 men and women to serve in India, China, Africa, Madagascar, Papua and the South Seas, and has spent about 55 million dollars. Top half of photo shows the Lord and Lady Mayoress of London receiving Chief Seretse Khama, hereditary chieftain of the Bamangwato people of Bechuanaland, S. Africa, whose grandfather, Chief Khama, attended the Centenary meetings of the Society. The Lord and Lady Mayoress are both active in the Society’s work.
