- "You name it; we study it"
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30415 ‘YOU NAME IT; WE STUDY IT’ (First of Two Pictures) MARYKNOLL, N.Y. -- “You name it; we study it” is the way the Maryknoll Sisters explain their unprecedented interest in educating themselves for unusual, often spectacular, careers in the mission field. Sixty-four Sisters are now currently enrolled in U.S. universities here and abroad; quite often their continuing education program is carried on between trips to the foreign missions field. Sister Maria Del Rey, shown with a friendly elephant at a mission post, is now a student at Columbia University; she’s seeking her M.S. in journalism. At top right, Sister Mary Ann Fidelis checks a baby’s health at a Pusan, Korea, hospital; today, however, she is a full-fledged medical doctor, completing her residency at Carney Hospital, Boston. At lower right, Sister Virginia Mary is shown as she helped a little Panamanian girl at a mission school; now she’s at New York University, following studies in art education. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31873 200-YEAR-OLD COMMUNION SET AUCKLAND, N.Z. -- The Rev. Robert E. Marsden, Anglican minister in Cornwall, England, holds a 200-year-old Communion set which he brought with him on a 12,000-mile journey to remote Oihi Bay, in the Bay of Islands, north of Auckland. The set belonged to the clergyman’s great-great-grandfather, the Rev. Samuel Marsden who, on Christmas Day 1814, became the first missionary to preach the Gospel to the Maoris of New Zealand. On Christmas Day, Mr. Marsden also will conduct a service at Oihi Bay and will use the same Communion set. The rite will mark the 150th anniversary of the pioneer missionary’s first service. - A start from nothing.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30708 A START FROM NOTHING WEST BENGAL, India -- Carving new homes out of the forest. This picture, taken in India just across the Pakistani border, shows Christian refugees as they clear ground for make-shift homes. They said they had left Pakistan to escape Muslim persecution. Many thousands have moved into India. The World Council of Churches issued an urgent appeal for aid to the refugees. First reports indicated that 20,000 Catholics, 15,000 Baptists and an undetermined number of other Christians were homeless and in need of clothing, food and drugs. As the giant exodus began there were only two Italian Catholic priests and the two U.S. Baptist missionaries in the immediate area to help them. Seagrave, 66, has pledged to "fight on to the very end" in a struggle to keep his Baptist Hospital at Namkhan, Burma, operating. New government restrictions, spurred by a drive toward greater nationalization, have seriously affected his medical activity in the country's northern hills. Two of Dr. Seagrave's assistants were finding it difficult to remain in Burma because of an edict revoking permits for foreign doctors and the government's withdrawal of a $10,000 annual grant to the hospital. In Rangoon, two other mission hospitals were closed by the government. Friends have reported that the famed Burma Surgeon, though showing signs of strain from his many years of service, has vowed to keep his institution in operation. Though an American citizen, Dr. Seagraves is not affected by the drive against foreign doctors because he was born in Burma. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-1D-64-NBM)

Several such centers are staffed by priests, nuns and seminarians throughout northeastern Wisconsin to provide a material and spiritual ministry to thousands of Spanish-speaking farm workers in the state for the summer. Nearly 97 per cent are Catholics. Besides providing food, the centers also furnish clothing and medical care for the entire family. The diocese’s migrant apostolate is now in its 17th year. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31997 CITED FOR AIDING BUENOS AIRES POOR BUENOS AIRES -- Thomas Hollywood of Sunnyside, N.Y., Argentina director of Catholics for Latin America (left), is proud of this mud, manure and brick oven he built for a poor grandmother in a slum area of Buenos Aires. Bottom shows him surveying the “villa miseria” (village of misery), on the outskirts of the Argentina city. The village is in a pit where construction companies once excavated sand, and where between 8,000 and 14,000 needy people live. Mr. Hollywood is being cited for his work among the poor of Latin America by the Eloy Alfaro International Foundation of the Republic of Panama. He was scheduled to receive the foundation’s award at a dinner in New York on Jan. 15. Founded in 1949 by Panama, the foundation is named for Eloy Alfaro, noted soldier, statesman and martyr of Ecuador. He was that nation’s President from 1895-1901 and 1906-1911, and was slain in a revolution in 1912. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (FRE-1A-65-NAB)
