- His goal: return to Korea.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31633 HIS GOAL: RETURN TO KOREA MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Two heart attacks within nine months won't prevent this missionary bishop's return to his See in Korea. Archbishop Harold Henry of Kwangju, a native of Minneapolis, is convalescing in that city pending doctor's permission to take up such Korean tasks as operator of the "largest piggy bank in the world." One of his "aid" programs in Kwangju saw him secure 523 purebred sows, building up a "piggy bank" which last year saw the archdiocese distribute 5,000 piglets to farmers. Archbishop Henry, by sending three nuns to Ireland to study the development of home-spun tweed from lamb's wool, provided a profitable at-home occupation for Korean women. His many "self-help" projects have drawn assistance from the U.S. Food for Peace Program and the German hierarchy -- gifts from the German prelates financed importation of Australian sheep. The 55-year-old prelate said he often borrows ideas developed by the 4-H Club movement in the U.S. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (MS-MINN-9E-64-W)

- Description

Dodge, head of the Methodist Church’s Laurenco Marques area (left), and the Rev. Robert E. Hughes, a denominational missionary, have been ordered deported from Southern Rhodesia as “undesirable immigrants.” A request to extend their departure date beyond July 31 was denied by the government. Although no other official reason was given for their ouster, it was reported that the Americans were told to leave because of their stand against racial discrimination in the African nation. Bishop Dodge’s area includes Rhodesia and the Portuguese territories of Angola and Mozambique. He has repeatedly been denied permission to visit these territories. - Burma surgeon's hospital threatened.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30519 BURMA SURGEON'S HOSPITAL THREATENED NAMKHAN, Burma -- The famous "Burma Surgeon," Dr. Gordon S. Seagrave, 66, has pledged to "fight on to the very end" in a struggle to keep his Baptist Hospital at Namkhan, Burma, operating. New government restrictions, spurred by a drive toward greater nationalization, have seriously affected his medical activity in the country's northern hills. Two of Dr. Seagrave's assistants were finding it difficult to remain in Burma because of an edict revoking permits for foreign doctors and the government's withdrawal of a $10,000 annual grant to the hospital. In Rangoon, two other mission hospitals were closed by the government. Friends have reported that the famed Burma Surgeon, though showing signs of strain from his many years of service, has vowed to keep his institution in operation. Though an American citizen, Dr. Seagraves is not affected by the drive against foreign doctors because he was born in Burma. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-1D-64-NBM)

- Says TV should improve quality of life.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-45928 SAYS TV SHOULD IMPROVE QUALITY OF LIFE NEW YORK -- Father Ellwood Kieser, C.S.P., the priest-producer of TV’s “Insight” series -- and a driving force behind the new Humanitas awards for TV programs that stress human values -- believes television can serve the quality of life and help people “to grow, develop and become more fully human.” He also feels that TV can provide “an experience of common brotherhood” not easily forgotten. For the past 14 years, Father Kieser’s “Insight” series has made a valiant -- although often lonely -- effort to bring to this nation’s viewers, through top-notch dramatic presentations, Christian values which relate to the whole spectrum of life’s experience. Of the Humanitas awards -- which provide prizes of $25,000, $15,000 and $10,000 to writers of prime-time TV fare -- the Philadelphia-born Paulist said it was the best way he and his Insight colleagues could devise to inspire and motivate TV programming that will humanize an audience. - Hits Philippines 'restrictive' probation.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-46641 HITS PHILIPPINES ‘RESTRICTIVE’ PROBATION MARYKNOLL, N.Y. -- A U.S. Roman Catholic missionary to the Philippines, who recently escaped deportation but was placed on “restrictive” probation in Manila for three years, has called his situation “unjust,” according to a report from Maryknoll headquarters. Father Edward Gerlock, M.M., a missionary in the Philippines for some 12 years, said, “I feel like a man who expects to die but only gets a broken leg. But I wouldn’t advocate getting broken legs as a good thing.” In October 1973, the priest was arrested in Mindanao and charged with being critical of the government’s martial law policies and giving support to the illegal Federation of Free Farmers. During the 16 months since his arrest, a period in which he was placed in the custody of his superior in Manila, church leaders throughout the Philippines rallied to his cause.
