- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30737 QUEEN SALOTE OF TONGA CELEBRATES 64TH BIRTHDAY AUCKLAND, N.Z. -- Following her custom of many years, Queen Salote of Tonga attended a small, private thanksgiving service, then entertained guests at a party to celebrate her 64th birthday. The Queen, who heads the Tonga State Wesleyan Church, marked the occasion this year at Auckland, N.Z., where she was receiving medical treatment. The service was conducted by the Rev. Arthur H. Scrivin, veteran Methodist Pacific islands missionary, shown here with Queen Salote and her nine-year-old grandson, Prince Alai-Vahamama'o. At right are the Rev. Athol R. - 200-year-old communion set.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31873 200-YEAR-OLD COMMUNION SET AUCKLAND, N.Z. -- The Rev. Robert E. Marsden, Anglican minister in Cornwall, England, holds a 200-year-old Communion set which he brought with him on a 12,000-mile journey to remote Oihi Bay, in the Bay of Islands, north of Auckland. The set belonged to the clergyman’s great-great-grandfather, the Rev. Samuel Marsden who, on Christmas Day 1814, became the first missionary to preach the Gospel to the Maoris of New Zealand. On Christmas Day, Mr. Marsden also will conduct a service at Oihi Bay and will use the same Communion set. The rite will mark the 150th anniversary of the pioneer missionary’s first service. - Nun hunts crocodiles for mission.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31791 NUN HUNTS CROCODILES FOR MISSION MOVEAVE, Papua -- With high-powered rifle ready, Sister Joseph Mary sails up-river from her remote mission hospital at Moveave, on the southwest coast of Papua, New Guinea, on a hunt for crocodiles. Spotting one, she will aim and fire and her assistants will drag the crocodile’s body aboard. Later the nun and her aides skin the crocodile and sell the skin to Australian traders, with proceeds going to her mission. A British author of adventure stories, Richard Pape, has credited Sister Joseph Mary with saving his life when grave infection followed an injury in the jungles of Moveave. Mr. Pape said he was brought to the mission hospital and the nun “pumped her entire stock of antibiotics into me.” Later he was taken to a hospital in Port Moresby where the completed his recovery.
