- Methodists told to leave Southern Rhodesia.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31340 METHODISTS TOLD TO LEAVE SOUTHERN RHODESIA SALISBURY, So. Rhodesia--Bishop Ralph E. Dodge, head of the Methodist Church’s Laurenco Marques area (left), and the Rev. Robert E. Hughes, a denominational missionary, have been ordered deported from Southern Rhodesia as “undesirable immigrants.” A request to extend their departure date beyond July 31 was denied by the government. Although no other official reason was given for their ouster, it was reported that the Americans were told to leave because of their stand against racial discrimination in the African nation. Bishop Dodge’s area includes Rhodesia and the Portuguese territories of Angola and Mozambique. He has repeatedly been denied permission to visit these territories. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30541 MISSION WORKERS FLEE CONGO TERRORISTS LEOPOLDVILLE, Congo -- Roman Catholic nuns and children of Protestant missionaries are evacuated to safety after more than a week of terror in the Kwilu Province of the Congo. Rampaging anti-government guerillas destroyed mission stations and killed at least four missionaries -- three Roman Catholic priests from Belgium and a Baptist from the U.S., Miss Irene Ferrel, 42, of Jerome, Idaho. Evacuation operations utilizing helicopters, light planes and commercial liners, were maintained around the clock to rescue the estimated 150 missionaries and their families from the besieged area. American youngsters and Belgian nuns, Sisters of the Congregation of the Holy Family, are shown here arriving at Leopoldville. - Tampa Protestant center aids Cuban refugees.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30508 TAMPA PROTESTANT CENTER AIDS CUBAN REFUGEES TAMPA, Fla. -- Though the heavy flow of refugees out of Castro-dominated Cuba has stopped, the needs of thousands who reached the U.S. mainland continue. At Tampa, Fla, a Protestant Cuban Refugee Center -- supported by seven denominations, several civic groups and individuals -- has operated for three years, providing assistance in the form of direct aid, as seen in the distribution of blankets to youngsters (top photo), and through such activities as English classes (bottom photo), to aid the newcomers in their transition to a new way of life. Miss Agnes Malloy, a Methodist missionary in Cuba for nearly 20 years, directs operations at the Tampa center, which has aided 5,115 refugees since its establishment. - Victims of Haiti's anti-church regime.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30610 VICTIMS OF HAITI'S ANTI-CHURCH REGIME MONTREAL, Canada -- Tired and showing signs of strain, the first group of Jesuits expelled by Haiti's dictatorial regime returns to provincial headquarters in Montreal. Eighteen -- 13 priests and 5 Brothers -- were deported because, according to Francois Duvalier's government, they had documents "likely to imperil the security of the state." At left, Jesuits debark from plane at Montreal Airport; at right is Father Robert Jean, showing the effects of detention and abrupt deportation. Vatican Radio said that the Duvalier dictatorship had "done much to the detriment of the Church in Haiti in recent years." Since 1959 Duvalier has expelled three bishops and 17 priests on various pretexts. The Canadian Jesuits started their Haiti mission in 1953. - Extremists' signs oppose Pope's visit, missionaries.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31768 EXTREMISTS’ SIGNS OPPOSE POPE’S VISIT, MISSIONARIES NEW DELHI -- Posters in New Delhi oppose the projected visit of Pope Paul VI to Bombay and call on Christian missionaries to “quit India.” The sign at left, inspected by an Indian student, states: “Mister Pope, Go Back Home!” The other warns Indians to “beware of their anti-national activities” in calling on missionaries to leave the country. India, a predominantly non-Christian nation, has hailed the Pope’s planned visit to the Eucharist Congress in Bombay. However, some extremists have used the visit as a means of reviving anti-missionary propaganda. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-NY-10E-64-W)

- Chaplain to refugees.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-29907 CHAPLAIN TO REFUGEES MACAO -- Refugees from Communist China can count on Spanish-born Father Luis Ruiz, S.J., to help them when they arrive in the Portuguese enclave of Macao. Known as “The chaplain to the refugees,” the Jesuit maintains a villa called Casa Ricci where his door is always open to those in need. He talks here with an old Chinese woman who came to him for funds to start a fruit business. Called “Lui Sam Fu” by the refugees, Father Ruiz was a missionary in China before the Reds took over. Since 1951 he has aided thousands of refugees from behind the “Bamboo Curtain.” Last year 10,801 persons registered at Casa Ricci. The exodus to Macao will continue, Father Ruiz says, “as long as people do not find more food and liberty in Red China.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-NY-9C-63-RB)
