- Oldest living missionary.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: OLDEST LIVING MISSIONARY #4877 HAMPTON, Va. -- Mrs. Harriet C. Stevens, oldest living missionary, celebrates her 105th birthday in the company of a young neighbor, Judith Evans, who reached her fifth birthday the same day. Mrs. Stevens, whose excellent health astonishes physicians, is still actively concerned with the crusade for peace through religion. She was born in Burma, the daughter of missionaries, and at 23 married a missionary. Her interest in Burma led her to translate references from the English Bible into Burmese, an arduous task that took 10 years to complete. She also founded the first school for Burmese women. A graduate of Bucknell College, class of 1858, she was cited for her achievements as an educator and missionary worker when that institution recently held its centennial celebration. The three-day conclave was co-sponsored by the Home Missions Council, the Federal Council of Churches, and the International Council of Religious Education.
