- The Cushing story
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31209 THE CUSHING STORY: MISSIONS, ECUMENISM (Second of a Series of 2 Photo Layouts) BOSTON -- Foreign missions and ecumenism distinguish the 25-year episcopate of Richard Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston. The “man of many hats” marked the 25th anniversary of his consecration on June 29. At top left, his mission zeal is epitomized by yet another hat, a “lluchu” given to him by Indians in Bolivia. Cardinal Cushing has been honored by two Popes for his foundation and maintenance of the Missionary Society of St. James the Apostle for Latin America. One hundred U.S. priests now serve areas long hit by a shortage of clergy, and the prelate, famed as a fund-raiser, supports their work at a cost of $1 million annually. At upper right, he is shown as he was embraced in 1947 by Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras, supreme leader of Eastern Orthodoxy -- the patriarch was then Primate of the Greek Orthodox Church in North and South America. Cardinal Cushing’s relations with the Orthodox and Protestants have spurred the ecumenical movement in the U.S.; in recent years he has preached or lectured before many non-Catholic groups. Below, left, he is shown with his old friend, Augustin Cardinal Bea, president of the Vatican Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity, as they participated in an unprecedented Catholic-Protestant Colloquium at Harvard. With them are Dr. Nathan Pusey, Harvard’s president, and Dr. Samuel H. Miller, Dean of Harvard Divinity School and chairman of the Massachusetts Council of Churches’ Committee on Christian Unity. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30497 LOOK-ALIKES MARYKNOLL, N.Y. -- Seeing double -- twice. Twin Maryknoll Sisters meet twins Ann and Agnes Shigo as the returned missionaries conduct an assembly program at a parochial. School. Sister Regina Rosaire and Sister Rosaire Marie -- born Mary and Marie Gray of Meadville, Pa. -- have returned from nine years of mission service in the steaming jungles of Bolivia. The twins, following the Maryknoll pattern, are now studying at college, pending reassignment to missionary work. While in Bolivia, they taught at neighboring missions. In 1957, Sister Regina Rosaire was stricken by polio, recovering completely after experiencing almost total paralysis. Maryknoll’s only twins hope to return to Bolivia where, they say, Communists have cells in practically every village. They say that presence of the Peace Corps has been helpful in spreading democratic ideals. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (M-NY-1C-64-W)

Sister Mary Agneta, one of Maryknoll’s Negro Sisters; she’s completing work for her B.S. in dietetics at Fontbonne College, St. Louis; 3. Sister Grace Frances; once a research assistant on a radiation project supported by the Atomic Energy Commission, she’s at the University of Notre Dame, working toward a Ph.D. in chemistry; 4. Sister Marie Clementia; back from mission work on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, she’s seeking her M.A. in education at the Catholic University of America. Bottom row, from left: 1. Sister Marian David; she’s at St. Vincent’s Hospital, New York, completing her internship toward a Ph.D. in psychology; 2. Sister Ruth Patrice, who saw mission service in Bolivia; she’s studying for her M.S. in nursing at St. Louis University; 3. Sister Marian James, a student at the Coady International Institute at Antigonish, Nova Scotia, she’ll establish Korean credit union on her graduation. 4. Sixty-four Sisters are now currently enrolled in U.S. universities here and abroad; quite often their continuing education program is carried on between trips to the foreign missions field. Sister Maria Del Rey, shown with a friendly elephant at a mission post, is now a student at Columbia University; she’s seeking her M.S. in journalism. At top right, Sister Mary Ann Fidelis checks a baby’s health at a Pusan, Korea, hospital; today, however, she is a full-fledged medical doctor, completing her residency at Carney Hospital, Boston. At lower right, Sister Virginia Mary is shown as she helped a little Panamanian girl at a mission school; now she’s at New York University, following studies in art education.
