- Mountain ministry.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-46006 MOUNTAIN MINISTRY KINGS BEACH, Calif. -- Southern Baptist Home Missionary Chuck Clayton talks to people about God in some most unchurch-like settings. His outdoor “pulpit” at Lake Tahoe on the California-Nevada border is a five-foot cross section of pine. In winter he expertly maneuvers the nearby ski slopes, holding worship services right on the snow, where the skiers are. And in summer, the mountain missionary leads teenagers on three backpack expeditions in the high Sierras. Mr. Clayton says his backpack program, called Christian High Adventure, “relates the adventures of the Christ life to the adventure of outdoor experience.” The program is part of Greater Tahoe Ministries, a resort ministry of the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board in cooperation with the Brotherhood Department of the Southern Baptist General Convention of California. The expeditions take six or 15 days and each day of hiking includes a 20-minute devotional period. “You need not be a Christian to come, but we are unapologetically evangelistic in our emphasis,” Mr. Clayton says. In addition to his mountaineering, Mr. Clayton is also pastor of the Frist Baptist Church in Kings Beach, Calif. Here he talks to youngsters attending a vacation Bible school at the rustic church, which is just five blocks from Lake Tahoe. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (C-ATL-9B-74-DS)

- Says TV should improve quality of life.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-45928 SAYS TV SHOULD IMPROVE QUALITY OF LIFE NEW YORK -- Father Ellwood Kieser, C.S.P., the priest-producer of TV’s “Insight” series -- and a driving force behind the new Humanitas awards for TV programs that stress human values -- believes television can serve the quality of life and help people “to grow, develop and become more fully human.” He also feels that TV can provide “an experience of common brotherhood” not easily forgotten. For the past 14 years, Father Kieser’s “Insight” series has made a valiant -- although often lonely -- effort to bring to this nation’s viewers, through top-notch dramatic presentations, Christian values which relate to the whole spectrum of life’s experience. Of the Humanitas awards -- which provide prizes of $25,000, $15,000 and $10,000 to writers of prime-time TV fare -- the Philadelphia-born Paulist said it was the best way he and his Insight colleagues could devise to inspire and motivate TV programming that will humanize an audience. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-46092 CARDINAL APPLAUDS YOUTH VATICAN CITY -- Cardinal John Krol of Philadelphia (right foreground) listens to proceedings during the Synod of Bishops. In a speech before the Synod, Cardinal Krol cited the generosity and social action of young people. In his statement on youth, Cardinal Krol said: "People have always talked against the young -- but how can we dismiss as insignificant the overwhelming interest of our youth in three contemporary motion pictures, 'Jesus Christ Superstar,' Godspell,' and 'The Exorcist'? Can it be said that youth is not turned on by Jesus Christ and things holy?" "Can we forget,” Cardinal Krol asked, "the generosity of youth to the point of sacrifice, which is most evident in their work in the Peace Corps, missionary volunteers, and their volunteer services in hospitals, homes for the aged, and other institutes for the handicapped?" - Description

George Ogle, a United Methodist missionary, waves as he boards a plane in Seoul after he was ordered deported from South Korea for criticizing the regime of President Park Chung Hee. Forced to leave his wife and four children behind, the 45-year-old native of Pennsylvania was placed on a California-bound Korean jetliner by police. Deportation was ordered when the missionary, who had been in South Korea for 20 years, refused to retract comments critical of the Park government for its arrests of students, intellectuals and clergy who asked for a restoration of democracy. - Ministers on 'Pineapple Island.'
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-45090 MINISTERS ON 'PINEAPPLE ISLAND' LANAI, Hawaii -- The Rev. A.G. Rietdorf (left) and the Rev. Foy King are a special kind of men -- they have to be. They work in a special kind of place. The two men are the "before and after" of Southern Baptist Mission work on lonely, remote Lanai, a Hawaiian island completely owned by the Dole Pineapple Company. Lanai, with less than 2,500 permanent residents -- mostly Filipinos who work in the pineapple fields -- is connected to Honolulu only by air; the boats that dock at the island are pineapple barges. Mr. Rietdorf a retired pastor from Arkansas, came to Lanai six years ago and as one of only two clergymen on the island, he has been a counselor, comforter and wedding official. Taking his place now is Mr. King, who is retiring from Kaunakakai (Southern) Baptist church on nearby Molokai to come to Lanai. Here, the two ministers discuss the transition while walking along a familiar trail on "Pineapple Island." Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO by Don Rutledge (DR-GA-1A- 74-DS)
