- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: #C-4541 NUNS RETURN TO CHINA MILWAUKEE -- Undismayed by the horror of their experiences as prisoners in a Japanese concentration camp, three veteran missionaries, sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis of Assisi, check their baggage at the rail depot here before entraining for the West Coast enroute to China. Their smiles indicate an eagerness to return to their charitable labors and to renew past acquaintances in the Orient. Sister Mary Veronica (left), of Sun Prairie Wisc., has spent 12 years in China; Sister Mary Ludmilla, of Chicago, nine years; Sister Mary Charitas, of Sublette, Ill., six years. - Oldest living missionary.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: OLDEST LIVING MISSIONARY #4877 HAMPTON, Va. -- Mrs. Harriet C. Stevens, oldest living missionary, celebrates her 105th birthday in the company of a young neighbor, Judith Evans, who reached her fifth birthday the same day. Mrs. Stevens, whose excellent health astonishes physicians, is still actively concerned with the crusade for peace through religion. She was born in Burma, the daughter of missionaries, and at 23 married a missionary. Her interest in Burma led her to translate references from the English Bible into Burmese, an arduous task that took 10 years to complete. She also founded the first school for Burmese women. A graduate of Bucknell College, class of 1858, she was cited for her achievements as an educator and missionary worker when that institution recently held its centennial celebration. - Mission to the Navajos.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: MISSION TO THE NAVAJOS #4803 BLUFF, Utah -- In these primitive clay-baked huts built at the base of a barren desert mountain the Protestant Episcopal Church maintains a unique mission for Navajos. It is named for St. Christopher, includes the only school for Indians in an area of 1500 square miles. The Rev. H.B. Leibler and a small staff, aided by the Navajos themselves, furnished the mission buildings. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (GWT-ALB-NM-BS-11B-6-A-E)

- Deportation hearing for Maryknoll priest.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-45863 DEPORTATION HEARING FOR MARYKNOLL PRIEST MARYKNOLL, N.Y. -- Father Edward M. Gerlock, M.M. (right, top photo) a Maryknoll missionary from Binghampton, N.Y., appears at a deportation hearing in the Philippines with his chief counsel, Lorenzo M. Tanada, a former Senator in the Philippine National Congress. Below, documents are marked during the hearings as spectators look on. At the table, from left to right, are: Mr. Tanada, Father Gerlock, a deportation board clerk and a Philippine National Constabulary officer called as a witness. Maryknoll Bishop Joseph W. Regan, M.M., of Tagum stands at far right. Father Gerlock, arrested by the government at Tagum on the island of Mindanao last October, is still awaiting a ruling by the deportation board although the hearing on his case began in December 1973. Charged with being critical of Filipino martial law, he is free to “come and go” within the city of Manila but is still in a kind of “limbo” so far as his future is concerned. One of three Maryknollers arrested in October 1973 and slated for deportation, the veteran of 12 years’ service in the Philippines decided to plead “not guilty” to charges and demand a hearing.
