- Victims of Haiti's anti-church regime.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30610 VICTIMS OF HAITI'S ANTI-CHURCH REGIME MONTREAL, Canada -- Tired and showing signs of strain, the first group of Jesuits expelled by Haiti's dictatorial regime returns to provincial headquarters in Montreal. Eighteen -- 13 priests and 5 Brothers -- were deported because, according to Francois Duvalier's government, they had documents "likely to imperil the security of the state." At left, Jesuits debark from plane at Montreal Airport; at right is Father Robert Jean, showing the effects of detention and abrupt deportation. Vatican Radio said that the Duvalier dictatorship had "done much to the detriment of the Church in Haiti in recent years." Since 1959 Duvalier has expelled three bishops and 17 priests on various pretexts. The Canadian Jesuits started their Haiti mission in 1953. Gatty, O.M.I., who came from Belgium in 1939 to become spiritual adviser to this tiny outpost where the cry of “gold” is attracting thousands of prospectors and adventurers to Canada’s newest boomtown. - With huskie, and on snow-shoes, minister in far north makes his parish calls.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: #447 WITH HUSKIE, AND ON SNOW-SHOES, MINISTER IN FAR NORTH MAKES HIS PARISH CALLS Moose Factory, Ont…The Reverend Gilbert Thompson in this far-north region knows several tongues. He holds services in English as well as in the Cree tongue, and converses in the language of the Eskimo and has a smattering of the dialects of British Columbia. In winter, he walks eight miles every Sunday for his services here and at Moosonee, the end of the railroad line. His Cree speaking parishioners far outnumber his English speaking congregation. Here he is shown on snow-shoes and accompanied by his fine huskie, making his parish calls. Credit Line Should Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (cob)
