- The eyes are ecumenical.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31045 THE EYES ARE ECUMENICAL WALNUT CREEK, Cal. -- A Roman Catholic optometrist smiles as he watches hundreds of old eyeglasses, frames and lenses added to a growing pile destined for the Presbyterian Eye Clinic at Taegu, Korea. Head of the project, “Eyes for Korea,” is Dr. George Hurd, far left; helping the campaign, left to right, are Dr. Kan of Oakland, Cal., president of a two-country optometric society; and Mrs. Ross Griffin and Mrs. James Crosby of regional women’s groups. A Presbyterian patient, Mrs. Elsie Exner of Walnut Creek, Cal., started the campaign rolling when she mentioned to Dr. Hurd the need of the Korean eye clinic for old eyeglasses. He enlisted opticians and optometrists over a wide area, and in a short time 15,000 sets of usable, old glasses were contributed. Manufacturers contributed 500 new frames. All are consigned to Dr. Howard Moffett, chief of the Presbyterian Medical Center at Taegu. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (AKM-WC-5D-64-W)

- Double trouble.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31015 DOUBLE TROUBLE KYOTO, Japan -- Will the real Ritsuko-chan please stand up? When Maryknoll Father Clarence J. Witte prepared to baptize a group of children at Kyoto, Japan, he was suddenly faced with identical twins. He had a list of baptismal names, but which was which--were Ritsuko-chan and Mitsuko-chan in the right order? The Maryknoller’s hunch was right; the twins quite innocently had switched seats. Parents and teachers confirmed the switch, so Father Witte went ahead with the baptism of the real Ritsuko-chan. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (AN-OS-5C-64-W)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30889 GIFTS FROM ‘HEAVEN’ TOKYO -- Japanese children stretch their arms to grasp gifts attached to toy parachutes at a “Children’s Carnival” held by Maryknoll Fathers in a country area. In bottom photo, some gifts are swapped or shown around to other children slow in reaching for a parachute. Carnivals are an unusual method used by missionaries to interest Japanese--particularly children--in the Church. Under a program of the Good Shepherd Movement in Kyoto, missionaries visit remote rural areas with tents, movies, loud speakers, leaflets--and toy parachutes--to help spread Christianity. According to Father James H. Gordon of Lynn, Mass., “What we have is a combination revival meeting, circus, and three-week school in Christian living. The follow-up is in the hands of the local missioner.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (MM-4C-64-NAB)
