Carnivals are an unusual method used by missionaries to interest Japanese--particularly children--in the Church. Under a program of the Good Shepherd Movement in Kyoto, missionaries visit remote rural areas with tents, movies, loud speakers, leaflets--and toy parachutes--to help spread Christianity. - Burma surgeon's hospital threatened.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30519 BURMA SURGEON'S HOSPITAL THREATENED NAMKHAN, Burma -- The famous "Burma Surgeon," Dr. Gordon S. Seagrave, 66, has pledged to "fight on to the very end" in a struggle to keep his Baptist Hospital at Namkhan, Burma, operating. New government restrictions, spurred by a drive toward greater nationalization, have seriously affected his medical activity in the country's northern hills. Two of Dr. Seagrave's assistants were finding it difficult to remain in Burma because of an edict revoking permits for foreign doctors and the government's withdrawal of a $10,000 annual grant to the hospital. In Rangoon, two other mission hospitals were closed by the government. Friends have reported that the famed Burma Surgeon, though showing signs of strain from his many years of service, has vowed to keep his institution in operation. Though an American citizen, Dr. Seagraves is not affected by the drive against foreign doctors because he was born in Burma. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-1D-64-NBM)

- A start from nothing.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30708 A START FROM NOTHING WEST BENGAL, India -- Carving new homes out of the forest. This picture, taken in India just across the Pakistani border, shows Christian refugees as they clear ground for make-shift homes. They said they had left Pakistan to escape Muslim persecution. Many thousands have moved into India. The World Council of Churches issued an urgent appeal for aid to the refugees. First reports indicated that 20,000 Catholics, 15,000 Baptists and an undetermined number of other Christians were homeless and in need of clothing, food and drugs. As the giant exodus began there were only two Italian Catholic priests and the two U.S. Baptist missionaries in the immediate area to help them.
