- The eyes are ecumenical.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31045 THE EYES ARE ECUMENICAL WALNUT CREEK, Cal. -- A Roman Catholic optometrist smiles as he watches hundreds of old eyeglasses, frames and lenses added to a growing pile destined for the Presbyterian Eye Clinic at Taegu, Korea. Head of the project, “Eyes for Korea,” is Dr. George Hurd, far left; helping the campaign, left to right, are Dr. Kan of Oakland, Cal., president of a two-country optometric society; and Mrs. Ross Griffin and Mrs. James Crosby of regional women’s groups. A Presbyterian patient, Mrs. Elsie Exner of Walnut Creek, Cal., started the campaign rolling when she mentioned to Dr. Hurd the need of the Korean eye clinic for old eyeglasses. He enlisted opticians and optometrists over a wide area, and in a short time 15,000 sets of usable, old glasses were contributed. Manufacturers contributed 500 new frames. All are consigned to Dr. Howard Moffett, chief of the Presbyterian Medical Center at Taegu. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (AKM-WC-5D-64-W)

- Migrant workers' children confirmed.
- Description
- C-31393 MIGRANT WORKERS' CHILDREN CONFIRMED STURGEON BAY, Wis. -- Auxiliary Bishop John B. Grellinger of Green Bay, Wis., administers Confirmation to children of migrant workers in St. Joseph's church, Sturgeon Bay. They were among some 500 children who made their Confirmation and received their First Holy Communion in two churches of the Green Bay diocese. The rites climaxed the diocese's 17th annual apostolate to migrant workers in the state. The children received their instructions for the Sacraments from about 200 lay volunteers, who also taught hundreds of other youths and adults. Several centers are operated by the diocese for the spiritual and material welfare of thousands of Spanish-speaking farm workers who come to Wisconsin for the Summer harvest. - For Maryknoll's sisters: Variety.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30416 FOR MARYKNOLL’S SISTERS: VARIETY (Second of Two Pictures) MARYKNOLL, N.Y. -- Variety -- and continuing education -- is a part of the Maryknoll Sisters’ life. As mission needs change, as new problems develop Maryknoll acts to train its Sisters for 20th Century service. Typical are these Sisters, now in American and Canadian universities and colleges, for special training. Top row, from left: 1. Sister Blanche Marie; she’s studying anthropology at Harvard University; 2. Sister Mary Agneta, one of Maryknoll’s Negro Sisters; she’s completing work for her B.S. in dietetics at Fontbonne College, St. Louis; 3. Sister Grace Frances; once a research assistant on a radiation project supported by the Atomic Energy Commission, she’s at the University of Notre Dame, working toward a Ph.D. in chemistry; 4. Sister Marie Clementia; back from mission work on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean, she’s seeking her M.A. in education at the Catholic University of America. Bottom row, from left: 1. - Text transcribed from caption: C-30415 ‘YOU NAME IT; WE STUDY IT’ (First of Two Pictures) MARYKNOLL, N.Y. -- “You name it; we study it” is the way the Maryknoll Sisters explain their unprecedented interest in educating themselves for unusual, often spectacular, careers in the mission field. Sixty-four Sisters are now currently enrolled in U.S. universities here and abroad; quite often their continuing education program is carried on between trips to the foreign missions field. Sister Maria Del Rey, shown with a friendly elephant at a mission post, is now a student at Columbia University; she’s seeking her M.S. in journalism. At top right, Sister Mary Ann Fidelis checks a baby’s health at a Pusan, Korea, hospital; today, however, she is a full-fledged medical doctor, completing her residency at Carney Hospital, Boston. At lower right, Sister Virginia Mary is shown as she helped a little Panamanian girl at a mission school; now she’s at New York University, following studies in art education. - Congo missionaries safely home.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30566 CONGO MISSIONARIES SAFELY HOME TALLMADGE, Ohio -- The clothes on their back and a souvenir spear were all the Rev. and Mrs. Harold Mullins and their four children could bring out of the Kwilu Province in the Congo, where anti-government terrorists burned their mission station and threatened their lives. The Baptist couple, with their 16-month-old baby, hid upstairs in their house but fire forced Mr. Mullins to knock out a window and jump. The baby was dropped to him as Mrs. Mullins also jumped to safety. The clergyman was knocked down and hit with a hammer in a brief fracas with terrorists. None of the youngsters was harmed. The life of another missionary was saved, Mr. Mullins related, when a former native Bible student jumped in front of a terrorist aiming a rifle. United Nations helicopters evacuated the group. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30559 PRESIDENT VISITS OLD TEXAS CHURCH FREDERICKSBURG, Tex. -- President Johnson attends services at a 118-year-old Protestant Episcopal church at Fredericksburg, Tex., not far from the First Family's LBJ ranch. The Rev. Jack Langford, rector of the stone and log St. Barnabas church, bends carefully as he proceeds through the low front door. The congregation, as the chart shows, is only $4,000 short of its $15,000 building fund quota. Interior and exterior views of the old mission church are shown below. President Johnson, a member of the Disciples of Christ, and Mrs. Johnson, an Episcopalian, worshipped at the 30-seat church in early January. At the service the rector acknowledged a gift of new seat cushions from the Johnsons. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-D-DAL-ZA-64-W)
