- Description
- Kasai, Republic of the Congo - 10 August 1960. Some 11,500 soldiers from nine countries are now on duty with the U.N. Force in the Republic of the Congo, helping to restore order ad calm in the country. Assistance also includes technical and medical personnel, air transport, food, heavy materials and various supplies. - William H. Sheppard Papers
- Description
-
William H. Sheppard was a Presbyterian minister and missionary to the Congo for the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. Executive Committee of Foreign Missions, 1890-1910. Sheppard was one of the earliest African-American foreign missionaries for the Presbyterian Church in the U.S. He and his wife, Lucy Gantt Sheppard, were stationed at Luebo and later at Ibanche. Collection consists primarily of photograph albums and photographs. Photographs document mission stations and churches at Luebo and Ibanche; the Sheppard family; other Presbyterian Church in the U.S. missionaries; and native people of the Bateke, Baluba, Bakuba, Zappo Zap, and other tribes. The collection includes a small number of papers, including correspondence; Sheppard's reminiscences of his time at the Stillman Institute in Tuscaloosa, Alabama; a pamphlet entitled "How Sheppard Made His Way into Lukenga's Kingdom"; printed materials about the Congo and King Leopold; hymnbooks in Tshiluba and an unidentified language; and glass and nitrate negatives. View the collection guide to learn more. The entire physical collection has been digitized.

- Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations relief in the Congo.
- Description
- Congo, February 1961 - One outstanding and reassuring feature of the confused situation in the Congo has been the prompt and generous response of governments in all parts of the world to the appeal of the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for food supplies and materials for the relief of the famine in South Kasai. Large quantities of maise, rice, dried milk, dried fish and palm oil are the main food stuffs so far contributed by more than 20 countries. FAO has also purchased supplies of fertilisers and seeds together with hoes and bush knives to enable the refugees to prepare the ground and now crops immediately. The transport of these food stuffs and equipment and their distribution is arranged between FAO and the United Nations. Sacks of maize seed provided by FAO are unloaded at Dilinga, South Kasai.

- New Methodist bishops in Africa.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31559 NEW METHODIST BISHOPS IN AFRICA NEW YORK -- For the first time in the 131-year history of Methodist work in Africa, two Africans have been elected bishops. They were among four chosen by the quadrennial Methodist Africa Central Conference. The bishops are: top, Bishop Ralph E. Dodge, an American, who was re-elected and assigned to Southern Rhodesia (left); and Bishop John Wesley Shungu, financial officer and legal representative of the Central Congo Methodist Conference, assigned to the Congo. Bottom: Bishop Harry P. Andreassen, a Norwegian missionary from Trondheim, assigned to Angola, where he has served since 1952 (left); and Bishop Escrivao Zunguze, pastor of the Methodist church at Cambini, Mozambique, assigned to Mozambique and South Africa. Bishop Dodge, an outspoken foe of racial discrimination, formerly headed work in South Africa, Angola and Mozambique, besides Southern Rhodesia. In July he was expelled from Southern Rhodesia on grounds that he was an "undesirable immigrant," and has been staying in Kitwe, Northern Rhodesia.
