- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30564 NEW YORK STUDENTS BOYCOTT SCHOOLS NEW YORK -- Schools throughout the New York metropolitan area where civil rights groups have charged the existence of racial imbalance were picketed by students who braved icy winds during a one-day boycott. Here, Negro, Puerto Rican and white students march in front of Seward Park High School on the city's lower east side. Of the 464,361 students who stayed away from classes -- 44.8 percent of the system's total enrollment -- it was estimated that some 360,000 were observing the boycott. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31974 CHRISTMAS SERVICE IN NEW MISSISSIPPI CHURCH RIPLEY, Miss. -- A group of northern college students, calling themselves “Carpenters for Christmas,” paused with members of the congregation of the Negro Antioch Baptist church near Ripley, Miss., for Christmas services. The church, burned to the ground Oct. 30 after a civil rights rally was held there, was reconstructed during the holiday weeks by the volunteer student group. The paster of the congregation, the Rev. John R. McDonald, preaches the Christmas sermon to the church members and students, who later put the roof on the new structure and rushed to complete the interior before returning to their campuses. Most of the volunteer carpenters were from Oberlin (Ohio) College. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-12E-64-NBM)

- Seminarians' racial Christmas card.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31952 SEMINARIANS’ RACIAL CHRISTMAS CARD ST. PAUL, Minn. -- This unusual Christmas card was a result of the involvement of a group of seminarians in a racial justice project last summer in Mississippi. The greeting card reproduces a photo of a Negro boy in a Harlem slum. Participating in the racial project were about 100 students preparing for the priesthood at Nazareth Hall, minor seminary of the St. Paul archdiocese, in suburban Arden Hills. As a result of their work they were determined to have a “relevant” message dealing with racial justice on one of the Christmas card they prepare and sell annually. The card reads: “Christ is here. Go to meet Him. He is here…in His poor, in the afflicted, in the little ones, in those thirsting for justice, in His least brethren, in the crucified. Embrace Him.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (WT-MINN-12D-64-NAB)
