- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31124 PHILADELPHIA RELIGIOUS LEADERS ACT ON RACE PHILADELPHIA- Protestant and Roman Catholic bishops make public the first interreligious statement on racial justice and religious harmony ever issued in Philadelphia. Shown left to right are Methodist Bishop Fred Pierce Corson of Philadelphia, head of the World Methodist Council; Catholic Archbishop John J. Krol of Philadelphia; and Protestant Episcopal Bishop Robert L. DeWitt of Pennsylvania. The joint statement was also signed by local Baptist, Lutheran, Quaker, United Presbyterian, United Church of Christ, and Jewish leaders. For the first time in this city, many of them attended a Mass offered for racial and religious harmony by Archbishop Krol in the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul. - Text transcribed from caption: PC-30532 UNIVERSITY CHAPLAINS "WALK FOR RECONCILIATION" DETROIT, Mich. -- Protestant, Roman Catholic and Jewish chaplains and their assistants from Wayne State University conducted a "walk for reconciliation" through downtown Detroit, Mich., to express an "ecumenical imperative toward human solidarity" in all areas of life, particularly race relations. Prayers were offered at each stop on their route -- a store-front church, a theater, a campus religions [sic. religious] center and an apartment building. Participants included, from left to right: the Rev. Malcolm Boyd, Protestant Episcopal chaplain; William Jacobs, lay assistant at the university's Catholic Newman Center; Father Joseph Walsh, director of the Newman Center; Rabbi Max Kapustin of the B'nai B'rith Hillel Foundation, and the Rev. LeRoy Collins (center), director of the Community Relations Service established by the Civil Rights Act, presides at a session during a four-day consultation at Warrenton, Va., where some 150 Protestant, Roman Catholic and Jewish clergy and laymen discussed ways to implement the Civil Rights Act and the new anti-poverty program. Sharing the speakers’ table are Dr. Robert W. Spike (right), executive director of the National Council of Churches’ Commission on Religion and Race, and Dr. J. Oscar Lee, associate director of the NCC commission. The consultation was sponsored by the NCC, the National Catholic Welfare Conference and the Synagogue Council of America. - Description
- Religious participation in the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom exceeded all expectations. In addition to many banners and signs designating specific religious groups, many churchmen and women marched as Protestants, Catholics and Jews, united in their support of full equality for all American citizens. More than half the signs in the March were those of churches, synagogues and related agencies.

- Three religious leaders participating in the March on Washington greet a Negro woman whose arrest made headlines in 1955. Mrs. Rosa Parks is shown with, left to right, Father John F. Cronin of the Social Action Department, National Catholic Welfare Conference; Dr. Eugene Carson Blake, chief executive officer of the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A.; and Rabbi Joachim Prinz, president of the American Jewish Congress. In 1955, Mrs. Parks was arrested when she refused to obey a bus driver's order to give her seat to a white person. Her case was one of several that arroused the nation, helped weld Negroes and whites in campaigns that culminated in the March on Washington.

- Text transcribed from caption: P-30348 NCC DELEGATES PRESS FOR CIVIL RIGHTS LEGISLATION PHILADELPHIA -- Two busloads of delegates and official visitors, a total of about 80 men and women, left the National Council of Churches’ triennial General Assembly at Philadelphia, Pa., on Dec. 6 for a one-day journey to Washington, D.C., to contact legislators and personally urge speedy passage of pending civil rights legislation. The trip followed Assembly approval of a resolution seeking accelerated Christian pressure on Congressmen to force the bill out of committee and onto the floor of the House of Representatives for debate. J. Irwin Miller, outgoing NCC president, (third from right, front row) greets Christian Methodist Episcopal Bishop B. Julian Smith of Chicago and other travelers on their return to Philadelphia. Also welcoming the returning group (second from left) was Dr. Robert W. Spike, executive director of the NCC’s Commission on Religion and Race. Next to Bishop Smith, a vice chairman of the race commission, is Dr. Anna Arnold Hedgeman, special projects coordinator for the commission, and to her right is Dr. R.H. - Text transcribed from caption: P-30651 CHURCH SERVICES PLANNED TO PRESS FOR CIVIL RIGHTS BALTIMORE, Md. -- If the pending civil rights bill hasn't been passed by Easter, daily worship services to express support of the legislation will begin in Washington, D.C. churches in the following week, it was announced at a meeting of the General Board of the National Council of Churches at Baltimore. Dr. Robert W. Spike, executive director of the NCC's Commission on Religion and Race, and Dr. Anna Hedgeman, director of special events for the commission, called for the services by Protestant and Orthodox churches. They said other religions may join in sponsoring the worship and prayer demonstration, participating in an initial mass meeting and then holding their own services.
