Description: Text transcribed from caption: P-31035 PROTESTANT CIVIL RIGHTS MARCH TO CAPITOL WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Some 270 Protestant ministers and laymen from 41 states and the District of Columbia marched to the U.S. Capitol and petitioned the Senate for swift passage of a strong civil rights bill. The procession formed at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation, where services urging an end to racial injustice were being held daily, and stopped briefly at the U.S. Supreme Court building for prayers commemorating the 10th anniversary of the decision against public school segregation. The procession, which was followed by visits to Senators, was organized by the National Council of Churches’ Commission on Religion and Race. Speaking in the Rose Garden outside his White House office, the chief executive said that “no group of Christians has a greater responsibility in civil rights than Southern Baptists.” Members of the Southern Baptist Convention, he said, “are part of the power structure in many communities of our land,” and he called for the clergy’s aid in securing Congressional passage of rights legislation. A total of 177 Protestant, Catholic and Jewish clergy and laymen heard the President in the East Room of the White House on the day following a mass interreligious convocation at Georgetown University to demand passage of the civil rights bill. KING MEETS WITH PRESIDENT WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is escorted by Vice President Humphrey to the White House for a meeting with President Johnson to discuss the Negro voter registration drive in Selma, Ala. After the conference, the noted Negro Baptist leader said the President “made it clear to me that he plans to offer legislation to Congress specifically on voting rights.” Dr. King, winner of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize, spent five days in the Dallas County, Ala., jail. Description: Text transcribed from caption: PC-29802 THE WASHINGTON MARCH -- 200,000 STRONG WASHINGTON, D.C. -- About 100,000 were expected…more than twice that many came to the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Early in the morning the pace of arrivals was slow. A happy, picnic atmosphere began to build around the base of the Washington Monument (in background). Then, near noon, caravans of buses that had been jamming outlying highways began to pour into the city. By the time the March started, a steady flow of people was pouring down Constitution and Independence Avenues. They jammed around the front of the Lincoln Memorial, lined the edges of the long reflecting pool, and listened to Freedom songs, entertainers and speakers. Description: Text transcribed from caption: PC-29797 RELIGIOUS LEADERS GREET WOMAN IN FAMED ‘BUS’ CASE WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Three religious leaders participating in the March on Washington, greet a Negro woman whose arrest made headlines in 1955. Mrs. Rosa Parks is shown with, left to right, Father John F. Cronin of the Social Action Department, National Catholic Welfare Conference; Dr. Eugene Carson Blake, chief executive officer of the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A.; and Rabbi Joachin Prinz, president of the American Jewish Congress. In 1955, Mrs. Parks was arrested when she refused to obey a bus driver’s order to give her seat to a white person. Her case was one of several that aroused the nation, helped weld Negroes and white in campaigns that culminated in the March on Washington.
