- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30792 CIVIL RIGHTS SUPPORTERS EXPRESS VICTORY HOPES WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A U.S. Senate vote to launch formal debate on the House-passed Civil Rights Bill was received happily by supporters of the legislation. Victory signs, signifying rejection of Southern senators’ attempts to delay debate by subjecting the bill to committee hearings, are made, from left to right, by: Sen. Hubert Humphrey (D.-Minn.) and Sen Philip A. Hart (D.-Mich.), key legislative supporters of the measure, and three prominent Negro civil rights leaders -- the Rev. Ralph Abernathy, Dr. Martin Luther King and the Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth. The Negro clergymen all have been active in integration efforts through the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, headed by Dr. King. Keating (R.-N.Y.), welcome some 270 Protestant ministers and laymen who marched to the Capitol to urge passage of the civil rights bill. The Minnesota legislator, floor manager for the bill, praised the march participants as “good citizens who come in the great American tradition of petition.” After brief ceremonies on the Capitol steps, the churchmen and women called on individual Senators. - Text transcribed from caption: P-31056 PROTESTANT CIVIL RIGHTS PROCESSION WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Some 270 Protestant ministers and laymen moved in silent, solemn procession from the Lutheran Church of the Reformation on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., to the Capitol, where they urged immediate passage of a strong civil rights bill. Enroute, the marchers paused briefly on the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court building for prayers commemorating the 10th anniversary of the 1954 decision outlawing public school segregation. At right, Dr. Robert W. Spike, director of the National Council of Churches’ Commission on Religion and Race, which sponsored the demonstration, follows Sen. Hubert Humphrey (D.-Minn.) down the Capitol steps. Sen. Humphrey and Sen. Kenneth B. Keating (R.-N.Y.) addressed the gathering, hailing religious support of the bill. Humphrey (D.-Minn.), second from left, by four national leaders of the United Church of Christ. The churchmen were among more than 100 delegates of the denomination, a group described as a "first wave" of ministers and laymen who traveled to Washington, D.C., to urge passage of the legislation "without crippling amendments." With Sen. Humphrey, the Senate majority whip, from left, are Dr. Ray Gibbons of New York, director of the UCC Council for Christian Social Action; Dr. Ben M. Herbster, New York, UCC Council for Christian Social Action; Dr. Ben M. Herbster, New York, UCC president; the Rev. - Text transcribed from caption: PC-30959 ENTHUSIASTIC INTERRELIGIOUS CROWD URGES CIVIL RIGHTS WASHINGTON, D.C. -- More than 6,000 Protestants, Catholics and Jews enthusiastically applaud as Dr. Eugene Carson Blake, United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. chief administrator and chairman of the National Council of Churches’ race commission, demands that civil rights legislation “must and will be enacted -- and the time is now.” All 535 Senators and Representatives were invited to the interreligious convocation at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., and several attended.
