- Text transcribed from caption: PC-32117 DR. KING ARRESTED IN VOTER DRIVE SELMA, Ala. -- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and other Negroes kneel to pray as they are being taken to jail after being arrested in a voter registration drive. The noted Baptist minister and winner of the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize was among 265 persons arrested on charges of parading without a permit as they walked to the Dallas County Courthouse to protest voter registration practices. In addition, some 500 students who stayed out of school to join the demonstration were arrested on truancy charges, while 37 adults were seized by police for contempt of court. Most of those apprehended were released without bail pending arraignment. Dr. King, however, remained in jail than post the $200 bond required for non-residents. - Title
- Priest gets 'self-imposed' exile.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31980 PRIEST GETS 'SELF-IMPOSED' EXILE LOS ANGELES- Father John V. Coffield, pastor of Ascension church in Los Angeles, has requested--and been granted-- a "self-imposed exile" in Chicago for an indefinite period. He is shown here with Father Juan Soto (left) and a group of parishioners, most of whom are Latin Americans and Negroes. Father Coffield, in announcing the exile, claimed he had been forbidden to preach out against racial problems by James Francis Cardinal McIntyre, Archbishop of Los Anegeles. He said he preferred the exile to maintaining "silence on racism," and as a solution to "an impasse between my cardinal and myself." Father Coffield also claimed he had been given an "enforced vacation of five months" from June to November after he had spoken out against a state proposition nullifying anti-discrimination laws in housing, later approved by voters.
