- Religious structures offer new, free architectural expression.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30481 RELIGIOUS STRUCTURES OFFER NEW, FREE ARCHITECTURAL EXPRESSION As modern architecture has surged into new areas of expression, houses of worship have provided the profession one of its most dramatic outlets. The president of the American Institute of Architects, Geoffrey N. Lawford, says architects “are finding increased encouragement in translating traditional building symbols and forms into meaningful contemporary terms” through religious structures. The New York Chapter of the AIA in January held a major exhibit on “Churches and Temples: Postwar Architecture” at a NYC gallery. Among the 21 religious structures featured were: (upper left) the “23 de Ener” (23rd of January) Roman Catholic church in Caracas, Venezuela, which utilizes a swooping design; the Lansing (Ill.) Presbyterian church (upper right), with sharp lines emphasizing man’s direct relationship to God; St. Patrick’s Catholic church in Oklahoma City, Okla., (lower left) an example of paraboloid, geometric design, and (lower right), a structure called the “Roofless Church,” a memorial to the Rappites, a utopian religious community which was founded in New Harmony, Ind., some 150 years ago. - Cathedral vandalized.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-46512 CATHEDRAL VANDALIZED ST. PAUL -- Father Paul LaFontaine, a priest at the Cathedral of St. Paul, examines damage to an altar in a basement chapel of the cathedral. Vandals started two fires in the cathedral and also ransacked the sacristy, main altar and basement chapel. The heaviest damage, however, was to the cathedral library in the basement where the intruders pushed over shelves and set fire to the scattered books. Although the vandals broke into locked compartments in the sacristy and chapel and removed the gold and silver chalices and Communion plates, none appeared to be missing, according to the cathedral’s rector. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-31122 FORMER BANKER HEADS CHRISTIAN SCIENTISTS BOSTON-Edward Froderman of Boston, a former banker born in Germany, was elected president of the Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, at its annual meeting in Boston. Rising in the background is the dome of The Mother Church. A trustee of the Christian Science Publishing Society, Fr. Froderman succeeds Mrs. Helen Wood Bauman of Boston. In 1949 he resigned as vice-president of the Drexel National Bank in Chicago to enter the public practice of Christian Science healing. He is a former manager of the denomination’s Department of Branches and Practitioners. Founded in 1879 by Mary Baker Eddy, the Christian Science Church emphasizes the healing power of Christianity. It has about 3,200 branches around the world, but Church law forbids membership statistics. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (C-6B-64-NAB)

- Baptistry to house Calvary Rock.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30300 BAPTISTRY TO HOUSE CALVARY ROCK BILOXI, Miss. -- The new $440,000 St. Michael’s church under construction in Biloxi, Miss., follows a trend of placing renewed emphasis on the baptistry. At left, laborers work on the church’s baptistry, a separate building similar in shape to the baptistry. At right Father H.J. Mullin, pastor of St. Michael’s, looks on as the five-and-a-half-ton chunk of Mount Calvary is uncovered by Dr. W.S. Sekul (left) and Steve Marinovich. The two men had been instrumental in getting the rock from Israel to the U.S. The rock will be trimmed a little and a basin carved in the top. Otherwise, it will be left as it is.
