- Text transcribed from caption: C-29673 AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Christ Child Society, a Catholic women’s group in Cleveland, has started a program of scholarships for Negro boys entering Catholic high schools. The scholarships cover tuition, fees and books, and are for four years, with a total value of $1,000 each. Mrs. William Townsend, Christ Child president, is shown presenting the scholarships to the first three winners: Maurice Bertrand, and Victor and Richard Cohea. The boys graduated from St. Thomas Elementary School in Cleveland. The society said it will award two or three scholarships each year to outstanding students. - Text transcribed from caption: P-30477 OFF-BEAT THEATER PRODUCES MINISTER’S PLAY DETROIT -- Opening night for an experiment in theater in Detroit. The Concept-East is an off-Broadway type of theater which, located in an oldtime barroom, now offers culture instead of beer. One of the first works presented was by the Rev. Malcolm Boyd, left, Protestant Episcopal clergyman long active in youth and race relations work. With him are Woodie King, center, and Cliff Frazier, actors in the minister’s play, “The Community.” Productions are carried on in a coffeehouse atmosphere. - Text transcribed from caption: P-30317 NCC HOLDS KENNEDY MEMORIAL SERVICE PHILADELPHIA -- President Kennedy, who was to have addressed the National Council of Churches’ General Assembly in Philadelphia, was memorialized at a special service held at the sessions. Officiating at the service were, left to right, J. Irwin Miller of Columbus, Ind., outgoing NCC president; Bishop George W. Baber of Philadelphia, African Methodist Episcopal Church; and Dr. Eugene Carson Blake, stated clerk, United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. Bishop Baber read the litany and Dr. Blake led the worship service. It was attended by representatives of the NCC’s 31 Protestant and Orthodox bodies. - Text transcribed from caption: P-30234 ‘YOUTH FOR CHRIST’ TEAM IN NIGERIA LAGOS, Nigeria -- This “Youth for Christ” team held many successful meetings throughout Nigeria. The group spent a month in the country, following visits to Ethiopia, where they had an audience with Emperor Haile Selassie, and Sudan. It was to continue on to meetings in Liberia and Sierra Leone before returning to the U.S. shortly before Christmas. Left to right, the U.S. musicians and singers are Gilbert Moergerle, Pittsburgh; Jay Platte, Indianapolis; Steve Edwards, Syracuse; Ed Johnson, Detroit; and Jim Bolder, Muskegon. The group lost the services of its leader, Gerald Major of Scranton, Pa., who was hospitalized for two weeks with spinal meningitis, a case that was rapidly arrested upon treatment. - Clergyman arrested in anti-segregation fight.
- Description
- Protestant, Catholic and Jewish clergymen have been among some 300 persons arrested in a series of efforts to integrate the privately owned Gwynn Oak Amusement Park. In one of the anti-segregation demonstrations outside the park, a minister donned a red, white and blue "Uncle Sam" outfit to symbolize the fight for racial equality. He was promptly arrested on trespassing charges. The clergyman, the Rev. David Andrews, assistant chaplain at Morgan State College, is shown here being taken into custody by police.
