- Mississippi church burnings.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31325 MISSISSIPPI CHURCH BURNINGS McCOMB, Miss. -- Sheriff R.R. Warren of McComb, Miss., examines the charred remains of Mt. Vernon Missionary Baptist church -- the 11th Negro church to be destroyed by fire in the state this summer and the second burned in the McComb area within five days. The 200-member Mr. Vernon church was organized in 1886. The widespread arson was seen as racist reaction to civil rights meetings in the Negro houses of worship. - Clergymen support Mississippi rights effort.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31682 CLERGYMEN SUPPORT MISSISSIPPI RIGHTS EFFORT McCOMB, Miss. -- Five Protestant Episcopal clergymen -- part of an interdenominational group of 20 ministers who spent a week working with civil rights volunteers in Mississippi -- stand in front of the bomb-blasted Society Hill Baptist church at McComb. Sixteen structures used by civil rights workers were bombed in the McComb area from June 21 to the end of September, four of them churches which were totally destroyed. The National Council of Churches race commission planned to send groups of clergymen to Mississippi to assist rights workers through the fall and winter. Shown here (left to right) are the Rev. Bruce Young of Attleboro, Mass.; the Rev. Thomas D. Allen and the Rev. Quinlan Gordon of Washington, D.C.; the Rev. Malcolm Boyd of Detroit, Mich., and the Rev. Earl A. Neil of Chicago. During their stay in McComb, Mr. Allen, Mr. Gordon, Mr. Boyd and Mr. Neil attempted to visit 24 Negroes who had been arrested for “criminal syndicalism,” a Mississippi law which forbids virtually any activity which promotes social or political change. In spite of repeated requests to county officials, they were denied permission to see the prisoners. “We had a feeling that we were completely outside the United States and were being treated as enemy aliens,” Mr. Boyd said.
