Title: Centennial of first black Episcopal bishop marked.
Description: Text transcribed from caption: P-46655 CENTENNIAL OF FIRST BLACK EPISCOPAL BISHOP MARKED WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The 100th anniversary of the consecration of James Theodore Holly, first black bishop of the Episcopal Church in this country, will be commemorated with a conference Feb. 7-8 at the Washington Cathedra. Featuring talks by experts on Haiti (where Bishop Holly ministered for more than 50 years), the conference is co-sponsored by the cathedral and the Black Episcopal Clergy Association. Bishop Holly was born in Washington in 1829 of Roman Catholic free parents, later converting to the Episcopal Church. He was ordained a deacon in 1855 and a priest the following year. Wright as the new executive director of the Young Women’s Christian Association of the U.S.A. has been announced in New York by Mrs. William H. Genne, national president. Mrs. Wright, currently deputy national executive director, will assume her new post Sept. 1. She succeeds Edith M. Lerrigo, who is retiring after 15 years in the Association’s top professional post. The YWCA, with its more than 2,300,000 members and program participants, is the largest women’s membership organization in the country. Mrs. Wright, a native of Pennsylvania, has served in a variety of YWCA posts for more than 20 years and has also been involved in community work. She is the wife of the Rev. Emmett F. Description: Text transcribed from caption: PCN-30989 PHOTOGRAPHER RECEIVES TWO BROTHERHOOD AWARDS NEW YORK-Dr. Lewis Webster Jones, president of the National Conference of Christians and Jews (right) presents two Mass Media Brotherhood Award for outstanding service to better human relations to Gordon Parks, photographer for Life magazine. Mr. Parks is the first to win two of the awards in the same year. He was cited for an article and a series of photos appearing in Life, Aug. 16, 1963. His article, “Long Search for Pride,” dealt with racial prejudice. The photo series, “How It Feels to be Black,” interpreted the emotions of a Negro child. Brotherhood Awards in the fields of newspapers and magazines were presented by the NCCJ to five other winners and eleven recipients received Certificates of Recognition. Galamison, center, Presbyterian pastor from Brooklyn, headed a drive which resulted in a massive boycott of public schools in New York City on Feb. 3. The Negro civil rights leader is shown here at a press conference with representatives of the National Association for Puerto Rican Civil Rights -- Gilberto G. Valentina and Irma V. Santaella. The boycott planners declared that a School Board plan for integration was inadequate and that the demonstration would be held. Several hundred "freedom schools" were established, mainly in churches, for the many thousand youngsters staying away from their regular classes for the day. Their appeal was issued following a meeting in New York. Shown around the conference table are from left, Bayard Rustin, organizer of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom; Jack Greenberg, NAACP attorney; Whitney M. Williams, vice president of the National Council of Catholic Men, and Richmond Barthe, Catholic Negro sculptor, at a ceremony in New York attended by 300 Negro and White Catholics. The awards are sponsored by the Catholic Interracial Council of New York and are given to the two Catholic laymen, Negro and White, who have done most during the year to promote interracial justice. Title: Seminarians' racial Christmas card.
Description: Text transcribed from caption: PC-31952 SEMINARIANS’ RACIAL CHRISTMAS CARD ST. PAUL, Minn. -- This unusual Christmas card was a result of the involvement of a group of seminarians in a racial justice project last summer in Mississippi. The greeting card reproduces a photo of a Negro boy in a Harlem slum. Participating in the racial project were about 100 students preparing for the priesthood at Nazareth Hall, minor seminary of the St. Paul archdiocese, in suburban Arden Hills. As a result of their work they were determined to have a “relevant” message dealing with racial justice on one of the Christmas card they prepare and sell annually. The card reads: “Christ is here. Go to meet Him. He is here…in His poor, in the afflicted, in the little ones, in those thirsting for justice, in His least brethren, in the crucified. Description: Text transcribed from caption: C-46224 PRIEST AND PIANIST FORM UNUSUAL TEAM NEW YORK -- Father Peter O’Brien, S.J., introduces the Mary Lou Williams Trio at a concert. The priest and the pianist are a team. “Her contribution to me is very simple to explain,” the assistant pastor of St. Ignatius Loyola Church in New York says. “She’s my spiritual adviser.” For his part, the Jesuit priest has served as business manager for the jazz pianist and composer since 1970. An unusual occupation for a man who spends most of his time preaching, visiting the ill, or teaching religion to grade school students? “I am not the same as a Las Vegas act manager,” Father O’Brien explains. “Mary Lou is one of the few performers I would call a true artist, and she is completely devoted to jazz.” Describing the relevance of all this to a man of the cloth, he notes that “true jazz is a product of oppression and symbolizes man’s spiritual triumph over it, so it is a very religious experience.” This is particularly true of Miss Williams’ music, which includes such pieces as her own “Hymn in Honor of St. Martin de Porres” and “Mary Lou’s Mass.” He says his motivation for becoming her business manager “really stems from by belief that an artist is someone who has been blesses [sic] with a rare gift, and that gift should have its place in the world for everyone to see.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (C-NY-11A-74-DS)
