- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30662 'FREEDOM SCHOOLS' IN BOSTON BOYCOTT BOSTON -- These were some of the nearly 10,000 children attending "freedom schools" in churches and public buildings during a one-day boycott to protest "de facto" segregation in public schools. Endorsed by the interreligious Boston Conference on Religion and Race, the boycott was sponsored by the Freedom Movement. Leaders included Canon James P. Breeden, vicar for intergroup relations of the Massachusetts Protestant Episcopal diocese. - Text transcribed from caption: C-31442 NAACP LEADER AT CATHOLIC SOCIAL ACTION PARLEY BOSTON -- Roy Wilkins, executive secretary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, is shown as he spoke before the National Catholic Social Action Conference at Boston College. At left are Msgr. George G. Higgins, director of the Social Action Department, National Catholic Welfare Conference, and Bishop Ernest J. Primeau of Manchester, N.H. Passage of the Civil Rights Act was a moral vindication of the "American dream," Mr. Wilkins said. - Text transcribed from caption: PC-46110 POLICE DISPERSE ANTI-BUSING CROWD BOSTON -- Helmeted police move in to break up a crowd of about 600 persons forming a human chain across a South Boston street to block busloads of black children on their way home from school. There were at least seven arrests and several injuries, including that of a black man caught by a mob of angry whites, in the worst outbreak of violence to date connected with court-ordered busing in Boston. - Text transcribed from caption: PC-46062 SMOOTH INTEGRATION BOSTON -- While demonstrations and violence marred the start of busing at some of Boston’s public schools, at least one group of boys took integration in stride. Black and white students at the Jennie Barron School in Boston’s Roslindale section playfully roughhouse during a recess period. The school runs from kindergarten through 5th grade.
