KING WEST BERLIN -- More than 25,000 West Berliners attended the annual rally of the Evangelical Church in Berlin-Brandenburg to hear Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who visited both sectors of the divided city. The famous integration leader was hailed by Bishop Otto Dibelius of the Berlin-Brandenburg Church (second from right) for his efforts to achieve racial reconciliation through nonviolence. Dr. King was invited to Berlin by Mayor Willy Brandt (right) to open the city's annual Cultural Festival. He later went through the wall at Checkpoint Charlie. East German border guards stopped the prominent integration leader, who had forgotten his passport, but after a delay allowed him to enter the Communist-dominated sector. Dr. King opened West Berlin's cultural festival, a two-week event dedicated to the interdependence of races. Joseph Jr., left, first to convert to the Catholic Church four years ago, will enter St. Joseph College (Collegeville, Ind.) to begin studies as a Brother of the Society of the Precious Blood. His younger brother James will enter Brunnerdale Seminary, Canton, to study for the priesthood in the same order. Sometime after the first of the year, Diane will go to Cincinnati to enter the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd. He is shown here with Dr. G. Merrill Lenox, executive director of the Council, who noted in his remarks welcoming Dr. Roberts to the post that more than 20 percent of the organization's constituency is Negro. The Sisters of the Holy Family, a community of Negro nuns, have sold the structure -- once known as Orleans Ballroom -- and are moving into a suburban area. They plan to build a residence and an academy for girls. The Sisters will welcome the quiet and serenity of a rural home -- for years they have had to stand the jazz music at late hours from nearby nightclubs and the din of revelers in the street. Anderson, a United Presbyterian pastor at Princeton, N.J., since 1948 has been named Chaplain of Smith College at Northampton, Mass. Assuming the post after Labor Day, he will be the first Negro to serve in the post at the noted women’s school. Dr. Anderson has been active in both religious and civic circles, spearheading integration of his own congregation and working with neighborhood integration and human rights groups. Amos Ryce II (left), pastor of Lane Tabernacle Christian Methodist Episcopal church, was elected president of the Metropolitan Church Federation of Greater St. Louis. He is the first Negro to head the 55-year-old organization. The federation also named Dr. Ned Cole (right), dean of Christ Church Cathedral (Episcopal), as "Ecumenical Man of the Year for 1963" for his ministry in his congregation, the federation and the community. Dr. Cole has been elected Bishop Coadjutor of the Protestant Episcopal Diocese of Central New York and plans to move to Syracuse, N.Y., in the spring. - Text transcribed from caption: P-32095 REBUILT NEGRO CHURCH DEDICATED JACKSON, Miss. -- Negro and white clergy and laymen gathered in the nearly-completed Christian Union Baptist church in north Jackson, Miss., for ceremonies dedicating the new structure. The brick building, filled to overflowing, stands on the site of a sanctuary that was destroyed by fire on July 19, 1964. The church is one of 13 damaged Negro churches in the state being assisted by the interreligious Committee of Concern and was the first to be dedicated.
