- Text transcribed from caption: P-30518 CONNECTICUT CLERGYMEN TOUR BAPTIST HEADQUARTERS VALLEY FORGE, Pa. -- Eight Connecticut Baptist clergymen, including six Negro parish pastors, toured American Baptist Convention headquarters in Valley Forge, Pa., where they were briefed on the worldwide program of the denomination. The visitors (seated, l. to r.) were the Rev. Samuel J. Williams, Calvary Baptist church, South Norwalk; the Rev. Nicholas Titus, executive secretary of the Connecticut Baptist Convention, Hartford; the Rev. William M. Philpot, Community Baptist church, New Haven; and (standing) the Rev. William Ortolf, director of Christian Education with the Connecticut Baptist Convention, Hartford; the Rev. Carl Taylor, Union Baptist church, Hartford; the Rev. Wyatt Minton, Bridgeport; the Rev. Richard H. Woods, Grace Baptist church, South Norwalk; and the Rev. Charles Sargent, Union Baptist church, Stamford. Collins, 20, is the first Negro student to be elected president of the Student Council at 113-year-old St. Joseph’s College, Philadelphia. A history major who holds the highest academic average in his class, Mr. Collins is also vice-president of the Junior Class. A native Philadelphian, he serves at Mass, is a member of the Knights of Columbus, and is active in seven extracurricular organizations at St. Joseph’s. - Text transcribed from caption: P-30317 NCC HOLDS KENNEDY MEMORIAL SERVICE PHILADELPHIA -- President Kennedy, who was to have addressed the National Council of Churches’ General Assembly in Philadelphia, was memorialized at a special service held at the sessions. Officiating at the service were, left to right, J. Irwin Miller of Columbus, Ind., outgoing NCC president; Bishop George W. Baber of Philadelphia, African Methodist Episcopal Church; and Dr. Eugene Carson Blake, stated clerk, United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. Bishop Baber read the litany and Dr. Blake led the worship service. It was attended by representatives of the NCC’s 31 Protestant and Orthodox bodies. - Text transcribed from caption: P-30969 CHARRED CROSS SYMBOLIZES RACIAL PROTEST PITTSBURGH -- More than 1,000 Methodists knelt, linked hands and sang “We Shall Overcome” as a charred cross -- burned by the Ku Klux Klan on the campus of predominantly Negro Tougaloo Southern Christian College near Jackson, Miss. -- is carried past the Pittsburgh Civic Arena where the denomination held its Quadrennial General Conference. The demonstration, against segregation in general as well as within the Methodist Church -- started at midnight with a prayer vigil and continued until Conference sessions were underway.
