Dr. Bottoms, 66, the pastor of the predominantly white Oakhurst Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Ga., won a first-ballot victory at the denomination's 114th General Assembly in Louisville to succeed Dr. Kraemer as moderator. Dr. Bottoms had already set to other precedents in the 113-year-old PCUS, when he served as the first black moderator of the Louisville Presbytery and the first black moderator of any PCUS synod (Kentucky) -- both in 1962. Baltimore -- Dr. Thelma Davidson Adair, 55, of New York City, was chosen as the first black woman moderator of the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. during its General Assembly in Baltimore. An unprecedented four ballots were needed for her election to a one-year term as the denomination's top elected official. The General Assembly also elected another woman, Martha P. Martin of Cincinnati, as their vice-moderator for the year ahead. Dr. Adair is an elder (lay leader) of the Mount Morris Presbyterian Church in Harlem, of which her husband is pastor. She has taught at all levels, from college to nursery school, and has held many church posts.

Description: Text transcribed from caption: C-30711 FIRST NEGRO CATHOLIC IN N.C. COUNTY WADESBORO, N.C. -- A happy day for what is regarded to be America's smallest parish. Miss Barbara Joan Clark, a student nurse, becomes the first Negro Catholic in Anson County, N.C., as she is baptized by Father Ambrose F. Rohrbacher, pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Wadesboro. Miss Clark, 20, chose St. Joan of Arc as her patron saint. Her sponsor is Mrs. Doria Foster Moore, who taught Barbara at the Lincoln Hospital Nursing School in Durham. Sacred Heart is the smallest parish in the least-Catholic state in the Union. It covers all of Anson County, which has a population of 24,962, of which 12,231 are Negroes. The county's Catholic population is 21 -- and Miss Clark was the 21st. Her baptism filled the church to capacity for the first time in its history -- largely with non-Catholic friends. Description: Text transcribed from caption: C-46224 PRIEST AND PIANIST FORM UNUSUAL TEAM NEW YORK -- Father Peter O’Brien, S.J., introduces the Mary Lou Williams Trio at a concert. The priest and the pianist are a team. “Her contribution to me is very simple to explain,” the assistant pastor of St. Ignatius Loyola Church in New York says. “She’s my spiritual adviser.” For his part, the Jesuit priest has served as business manager for the jazz pianist and composer since 1970. An unusual occupation for a man who spends most of his time preaching, visiting the ill, or teaching religion to grade school students? “I am not the same as a Las Vegas act manager,” Father O’Brien explains. “Mary Lou is one of the few performers I would call a true artist, and she is completely devoted to jazz.” Describing the relevance of all this to a man of the cloth, he notes that “true jazz is a product of oppression and symbolizes man’s spiritual triumph over it, so it is a very religious experience.” This is particularly true of Miss Williams’ music, which includes such pieces as her own “Hymn in Honor of St. Martin de Porres” and “Mary Lou’s Mass.” He says his motivation for becoming her business manager “really stems from by belief that an artist is someone who has been blesses [sic] with a rare gift, and that gift should have its place in the world for everyone to see.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (C-NY-11A-74-DS)
