- "Black Catholics Concerned."
- Description
- 'Black Catholics Concerned.' Washington, D.C. -- Black Roman Catholics across the country -- about 1 million -- are being asked to contribute to a special collection on Sunday, Oct. 8, as part of a "Black Catholics Concerned" program sponsored by the National Office of Black Catholics (NOBC). The campaign is seeking to support several major programs being developed by the NOBC, including recruiting black vocations to religious life, developing black Catholic lay leadership, underwriting continuing education for black nuns, priests and Brothers, and the establishment of a national training center for black priests. This panel illustrates the aims of the campaign. Top left -- A black layman at prayer. One of the aims of the program is the development of strong black Catholic lay leadership. Top center -- Brother Anthony Clark, S.V.D. (center), tells two young men about the religious life at the Society of the Divine Word's recruiting booth at Black Expo in Chicago. A successful campaign will enable black Catholics, for the first time, to develop their own direct effort to encourage more vocations from among black Catholics. Top right -- Using a tiger pelt as an altar cloth, Father Kenneth Brigham, Father George Clements and Father Dominic Caromon (left to right) celebrate a "black unity Mass" at Holy Angels church in Chicago. A goal of "Black Catholics Concerned" is to stimulate an authentic black contribution to Catholic worship. Bottom left -- Father Ivan Hughes, O.S.B., confers his first blessing after ordination to the priesthood at the Benedictine St. Pius X Monastery in Pevely, Mo. Through the establishment of a training center for priests, the program hopes to prepare black candidates for the priesthood. Bottom center -- Auxiliary Bishop Harold Perry of New Orleans (center), the nation's only black bishop, is principal celebrant at a Mass during a meeting of the National Black Sisters Conference in Pittsburgh. Black nuns bring the Offertory gifts to the altar. Continuing education programs for black religious is another of the program's aims. Bottom right -- Artists Eugene Edaw (left) and William Walker stand in front of the facade of Detroit's St. Bernard church, which they designed. The work depicts the struggle of blacks, including a painting showing a black Moses confronting a black Pharaoh, demanding that he "let my people go." Black Catholics are being urged to combine Afro-American cultural elements and their Catholic heritage in worship and the arts.

- Dr. King wins Nobel Peace Prize.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31714 DR. KING WINS NOBEL PEACE PRIZE ATLANTA, Ga. -- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who has led the non-violent movement for civil rights in America for some ten years, was named to receive the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. The noted Baptist minister received the news from his wife by phone while at St. Joseph’s Infirmary, a Catholic hospital in Atlanta, where he had gone for a physical check-up. He said that “every penny” of the award money -- expected to be more than $54,000 -- would go for the civil rights movement. Dr. King is founder and president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, dedicated to promoting equal rights for all Negroes. He is the second American Negro and the youngest person -- at 35 -- to win the Nobel Peace Prize. In September, Dr. King was received by Pope Paul VI in private audience at the Vatican. - Text transcribed from caption: C-45907 PROUD PARENTS NASHVILLE -- Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Dean are joined by their son, Father Edwin Dean, Jr., as they look over a newspaper account of his recent ordination to the priesthood at their Nashville home. Father Dean, the first black Tennessean to become a Catholic priest, was brought up as a Baptist and attended the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, affiliated with the National Baptist Convention, U.S.A., Inc. with his parents until he was 12, when he made the decision to become a Catholic. Mrs. Dean said that she and her husband had no objection to their son’s becoming a priest. “The whole family attended his ordination service, along with almost all the congregation of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.” She said her son first expressed an interest in the Catholic Church at the age of four. He attended St. Vincent de Paul School, in the parish he now serves as assistant pastor, from the second grade on and was baptized a Catholic at age 13. - Churchmen play key role in health drive.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-32043 CHURCHMEN PLAY KEY ROLE IN HEALTH DRIVE (No. 1 in a series of 4 photos) NEWARK, N.J. -- Simply making drugs and vaccines available to the public often does not stimulate the desired response in areas most in need of mass immunization, public health officials have discovered. As part of a mounting campaign to reach people and let them know medical assistance is at hand, the U.S. Public Heath Service is distributing a film, “To Open a Door,” which chronicles methods employed in a largely Negro and Puerto Rican section of Newark, N.J., where a “crash program” was undertaken to induce residents to accept the Sabin oral vaccine against polio. Clergymen, like the Baptist minister shown here urging his church members to take the vaccine, played a key role in the project. Officials estimated that 80 per cent of an “almost unreachable” population received the vaccine. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (MWN-NY-1D-65-NBM)

- Episcopal Bishop of Liberia.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: EPISCOPAL BISHOP OF LIBERIA #1797 NEW YORK -- The Rt. Rev. Bravid W. Harris, bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church’s Missionary District of Liberia, West Africa, (shown above) conferred here with Presiding Bishop Henry St. George Tucker at Church headquarters. The Episcopal Church has 3,052 communicants and about 2,500 church school pupils and numerically it is the largest church in Liberia. Bishop Harris, whose control extends over 57 churches and mission stations, said he was fortunate to visit the establishments even twice a year, owing to transportation difficulties in the 45,000 sq. mile country. “Along the coast I travel by surf-boat, a kind of sailing vessel which, of course, depends on the winds. It takes three days at best to travel 60 miles,” he said. “Travel to the interior, by river, is accomplished by dug-out canoe.” The Bishop went to West Africa last October. A native of Warrenton, N.C., he was rector of the Grace Episcopal Church, Norfolk, Va., for 19 years when he joined the Church’s National Council here as educational secretary for its Negro work. He plans to return to Liberia in two months. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BH-NY-JOG-2C-6-A-E)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-46141 PRESIDENT, DR. KING ADDRESS ALC CONVENTION DETROIT -- At top, President Gerald Ford addresses delegates attending the seventh general convention of the American Lutheran Church in Detroit. After receiving an enthusiastic welcome as he entered the convention hall, President Ford said he was moved by their convention theme, Ministering to a Hungry World, and commended the ALC for its work in preparing for the bicentennial. Seated among the platform guests were Dr. Fredrik Schoitz, ALC president emeritus, and his wife. Below, Dr. Martin Luther King, Sr. (right) is warmly greeted by delegates after speaking to the convention. Dr. King, who is pastor of Atlanta’s Ebenezer Baptist Church, said he felt no bitterness towards those who killed his wife and son. “I do not hate the man (James Earl Ray) seeking a new trial in Tennessee who supposedly took the life of my dear son," he told the delegates. “I don’t hate the man (Wayne Chenault) who came by…to get me and took the life of my wife. I’ve got a job to do -- I love you, every one of you, and I hope you love me." Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (C-DET-10C-74-DS)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-45700 CENTER OF ATTRACTION SAGINAW, Mich. -- Father Bartholomew Kestell and his puppet, “Father Oscar,” entertain a group of youngsters at St. Joseph School in Saginaw, Mich. The Capuchin priest was in the Midwest for a brief vacation following his second four-year mission stint on the Persian Gulf sheikdom of Bahrain Island. A man in perpetual motion who is sometimes called “The Brown Tornado” (for his brown robe) by fellow priests, Father Barth, a native of New Holstein, Wisc., is widely known in Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan for his wide range of talents. He is an architect, an archaeologist, a puppeteer, a historian and a former Navy chaplain. When Father Barth returns to the Mid-East, he will begin construction on the first Catholic church in Oman, another Persian Gulf sheikdom, in more than 300 years. The church will reflect Arabic architecture because, as Father Barth explains, 50 years from now it might serve as a mosque. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (BFS-SAG-6C-74-DS)

- Two views of busing.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-46174 TWO VIEWS OF BUSING BOSTON -- Students at Boston’s Hyde Park High School (top photo) look through a shattered window of their school bus, damaged when fights broke out between black and white students at the school. Several students were injured in the incident, just part of the violence which has marred Boston’s court-ordered busing plan since the start of the school year. A more peaceful view of busing is achieved by four Boston students as they discuss school desegregation efforts with a Charlotte, N.C., student coordinating council (bottom photo). The four students (foreground left to right), Barbara Steer, Dana Gonsal, Bob Messina and Linda Lawrence, are members of the Hyde Park High School biracial committee who were invited to the Southern City by students to get a look at integration and how it works in Charlotte’s public high schools, where a massive busing program has been in effect for 10 years. “We’re still working at it every day, and we don’t have any miracle answers," a Charlotte student told the Boston group. “But what was a new situation for us 10 years ago is a new situation for you now. And we want you to know we’ve learned a lot about judging anybody, black or white, as an individual. It just took time." Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (B-BOS/NC-10D-74-DS)
