KING WEST BERLIN -- More than 25,000 West Berliners attended the annual rally of the Evangelical Church in Berlin-Brandenburg to hear Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who visited both sectors of the divided city. The famous integration leader was hailed by Bishop Otto Dibelius of the Berlin-Brandenburg Church (second from right) for his efforts to achieve racial reconciliation through nonviolence. Dr. King was invited to Berlin by Mayor Willy Brandt (right) to open the city's annual Cultural Festival. He later went through the wall at Checkpoint Charlie. East German border guards stopped the prominent integration leader, who had forgotten his passport, but after a delay allowed him to enter the Communist-dominated sector. Dr. King opened West Berlin's cultural festival, a two-week event dedicated to the interdependence of races. With the President at its meeting which also included discussion of the administration's civil rights program were, left to right, Roy Wilkins, executive director of the NAACP; James Farmer, national director of CORE; Dr. King, Baptist minister and head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference; and Whitney Young of the Urban League. - Text transcribed from caption: PC-30792 CIVIL RIGHTS SUPPORTERS EXPRESS VICTORY HOPES WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A U.S. Senate vote to launch formal debate on the House-passed Civil Rights Bill was received happily by supporters of the legislation. Victory signs, signifying rejection of Southern senators’ attempts to delay debate by subjecting the bill to committee hearings, are made, from left to right, by: Sen. Hubert Humphrey (D.-Minn.) and Sen Philip A. Hart (D.-Mich.), key legislative supporters of the measure, and three prominent Negro civil rights leaders -- the Rev. Ralph Abernathy, Dr. Martin Luther King and the Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth. The Negro clergymen all have been active in integration efforts through the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, headed by Dr. King.
