- Text transcribed from caption: P-31280 NEGRO BISHOP PREACHES AT METHODIST CONSECRATION PORTLAND, Ore. -- Bishops and elders “lay hands” on newly-elected Methodist Bishop R. Marvin Stuart of the Denver area during consecration ceremonies in Firth Methodist church, Portland, Ore. Right photo shows Negro Bishop Charles F. Golden of Nashville, Tenn., delivering the sermon at the rites. The consecration was held during the quadrennial meeting of the Methodist Western Jurisdiction. Bishop Stuart was pastor of First Methodist church, Palo Alto, Cal., prior to the election to the episcopacy. He succeeds Bishop Glenn R. Phillips, who retired after serving at Denver for 16 years. - Text transcribed from caption: P-31198 21,000 NAZARENES ATTEND COMMUNION SERVICE PORTLAND, Ore -- An estimated 21,000 members of the Church of the Nazarene jammed Portland’s Memorial Coliseum and adjoining rooms for a Communion service opening the denomination’s quadrennial General Assembly. Theme of the assembly, “In the Power of the Spirit,” is displayed on banner. Preaching the sermon was Dr. G.B. Williamson of Kansas City, Mo., a general superintendent of the Church. Founded in 1908 at Pilot Point, Texas, the denomination is one of the largest holiness bodies in the world. It has some 405,000 members, including about 65,000 in foreign countries. Lawther of Portland, Ore., a staff member of the YWCA of the U.S.A., has been named advisory secretary to the new YWCA of Ethiopia, founded in 1962. She has been Pacific Northwest regional executive director for the College and University Division of the YWCA and the World University Service. Associated with the YWCA since 1945, primarily in educational positions, Mrs. Lawther will work in a child-care and literacy program being launched by the Ethiopia YWCA and social work agencies. - Text transcribed from caption: P-31429 INJURED VAULTER AT CHRISTIAN CONFERENCE ASHLAND, Ore. -- Former champion pole-vaulter Brian Sternberg, paralyzed in an accident, was speaker at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Conference at Southern Oregon College, Ashland, Ore., which was attended by some 500 top Pacific Coast athletes and coaches. Here, the injured vaulter is visited in the college infirmary by Leonard LeSourd, executive director of Guideposts, non-denominational inspirational monthly magazine, and his wife, Catherine Marshall, author of religious books including "A Man Called Peter."
