- Text transcribed from caption: GOVERNOR ADDRESSES SUNDAY SCHOOL LEADERS P-31709 PORTLAND, Ore. -- Gov. Mark Hatfield of Oregon (second right) addressed some 4,500 delegates attending the 19th annual convention of the National Sunday School Association in Portland. With him are leaders of the NSSA, an interdenominational conservative Protestant organization. Left to right are the Rev. George S. McNeill, executive director; the Rev. E.C. Thomas, president; Gov. Hatfield; and Dr. Harold Etling, retiring president. Mr. Thomas, a minister of the Church of God (Cleveland, Tenn.), was elected NSSA president at a business session. In his talk, Gov. - Text transcribed from caption: P-45892 RUSSIAN BAPTISTS ATTEND YOUTH MEETING PORTLAND, Ore. -- Baptist leaders from Russia visit Portland’s First Baptist Church during a break between events of the 8th Baptist Youth World Conference. From left are: Valentine Ryndina, an interpreter at Baptist headquarters in Moscow; Alexsei M. Bichkov, minister and general secretary of the All-Union Council of Evangelical Christians-Baptists of U.S.S.R.; Leonid F. Ckatchenko, choir leader of Moscow Baptist Church; and Michael J. Zhidkov, minister of Moscow Baptist Church and vice-president of the All-Union Council of Evangelical Christians-Baptists of U.S.S.R. During the Baptist World Alliance-sponsored meeting, attended by more than 5,000 delegates from 50 nations, Mr. Bichkov said that the Soviet government does not bother Baptists and there is “increasing mutual understanding” between church and state. “Sometimes an extreme atheist violates our rights,” he said.” Then the church sends up a petition to us and we send a petition to the government, and our rights are protected.” Baptists report that there are more than 550,000 Baptists in the Soviet Union, which is third in the world in the number of Baptist believers, after the U.S. and India. - Text transcribed from caption: P-31280 NEGRO BISHOP PREACHES AT METHODIST CONSECRATION PORTLAND, Ore. -- Bishops and elders “lay hands” on newly-elected Methodist Bishop R. Marvin Stuart of the Denver area during consecration ceremonies in Firth Methodist church, Portland, Ore. Right photo shows Negro Bishop Charles F. Golden of Nashville, Tenn., delivering the sermon at the rites. The consecration was held during the quadrennial meeting of the Methodist Western Jurisdiction. Bishop Stuart was pastor of First Methodist church, Palo Alto, Cal., prior to the election to the episcopacy. He succeeds Bishop Glenn R. Phillips, who retired after serving at Denver for 16 years. - Text transcribed from caption: P-31198 21,000 NAZARENES ATTEND COMMUNION SERVICE PORTLAND, Ore -- An estimated 21,000 members of the Church of the Nazarene jammed Portland’s Memorial Coliseum and adjoining rooms for a Communion service opening the denomination’s quadrennial General Assembly. Theme of the assembly, “In the Power of the Spirit,” is displayed on banner. Preaching the sermon was Dr. G.B. Williamson of Kansas City, Mo., a general superintendent of the Church. Founded in 1908 at Pilot Point, Texas, the denomination is one of the largest holiness bodies in the world. It has some 405,000 members, including about 65,000 in foreign countries. - Text transcribed from caption: P-29940 NEW YWCA SECRETARY IN ETHIOPIA NEW YORK -- Mrs. Gladys C. Lawther of Portland, Ore., a staff member of the YWCA of the U.S.A., has been named advisory secretary to the new YWCA of Ethiopia, founded in 1962. She has been Pacific Northwest regional executive director for the College and University Division of the YWCA and the World University Service. Associated with the YWCA since 1945, primarily in educational positions, Mrs. Lawther will work in a child-care and literacy program being launched by the Ethiopia YWCA and social work agencies. - Text transcribed from caption: P-31429 INJURED VAULTER AT CHRISTIAN CONFERENCE ASHLAND, Ore. -- Former champion pole-vaulter Brian Sternberg, paralyzed in an accident, was speaker at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Conference at Southern Oregon College, Ashland, Ore., which was attended by some 500 top Pacific Coast athletes and coaches. Here, the injured vaulter is visited in the college infirmary by Leonard LeSourd, executive director of Guideposts, non-denominational inspirational monthly magazine, and his wife, Catherine Marshall, author of religious books including "A Man Called Peter."
