- Adolphus Clemens Good Papers
- Description
-
Adolphus Clemens Good was appointed in 1882 by the Board of Foreign Missions to the West Africa Mission of the Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. Initially assigned to the Baraka Station, he was transferred to the Ogowe River area in 1884 and spent the bulk of his career there. In addition to his work as a teacher and evangelist, Dr. Good studied bird and animal life in the Ogowe Valley and in the Cameroon, as well as the ethnology and religious beliefs of various West African tribes. He also prepared a text on Bulu grammar which was published posthumously. Consists of Dr. Good's journals and notes, his papers on the religious beliefs of the Gabwa and the role of women among the Bulu, and miscellaneous Bulu language items. The collection also contains various personal items, including letters sent to his widow, Lydia B. Walker Good. View the collection guide to learn more. The entire physical collection has been digitized.

- An African chief is baptized.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-46076 AN AFRICAN CHIEF IS BAPTIZED MINNEAPOLIS -- Forty-two years after barring the rite to his sons, Abraham Abba, a village chief in the Central African Republic, is baptized a Christian by American Lutheran Church Missionary Lloyd Sand and Pastor Andre Garba, the first native to be ordained a Lutheran pastor in the Cameroon and the Central African Republic. The story of the old chief's baptism is detailed in the Oct. 1 issue of the Lutheran Standard by Dr. George H. Muedeking, editor of the Minneapolis-based American Lutheran Church publication. It begins 42 years ago when the first two Lutheran missionaries from the U.S. reached the village. The missionaries taught the chief and others to read and although many of the villagers embraced Christianity, the chief, a Muslim like his father and his children, did not. He even barred his sons from being baptized when they asked him permission. This Summer Chief Abba, well past 80, asked to be baptized and on July 4 the ceremony was performed in the village church. As a postscript to his article, Dr. Muedeking reported that Chief Abba died 20 days after his Baptism. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO Courtesy The Lutheran Standard (LS-MIN-9D-74-DS)

- A Towering Monarch Fallen.
- Description
- The trees of the rainforest rain from scrub to majestic type such as here pictured - a giant cottonwood. Prized very highly for its beautifully grained lumber is the African mahogany, quantities of which have been exported to Europe and America. Some mission residences have been constructed of finished white mahogany, the waxed grain supplanting the need for pictures.
