Description: Text transcribed from caption: PC-30807 WORSHIPPERS OBSERVE EASTER AT EARTHQUAKE SCENE ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- Some churches were severely damaged and many others were darkened and left without heat as an earthquake of tremendous proportion rocked Alaska. Easter worshippers gathered, not only in churches but also in garages and warehouses before returning to the huge task of digging out from under the quake’s rubble. Despite the tragedy, Easter services, as at Elmendorf Air Force Base chapel (top), where many work parkas and other heavy clothing, were well attended. In Anchorage (bottom), the quake left part of Fourth Avenue, the main thoroughfare, and a row of cars about 20 feet below the level of the rest of the street. Hewett, 30 pounds lighter after an 18-day hunger strike in protest to racial segregation in schools at Chester, Pa., smiles at the youngest of his six children. Six-month-old Maria Theresa is held by another daughter, Darrale Jeanne, 13. Mrs. Hewett is at right. The clergyman, with one arm in a sling, ended his fast after Pennsylvania Governor William Scranton launched an effort to solve the Chester school segregation problem. He was arrested on several charges during a protest demonstration and after 10 days in jail, the last three in “complete fast” without liquids, was hospitalized. Wendell Taylor (right), pastor of the Central Methodist church (Negro), in the city. Bishop James K. Mathews of Boston (left) and Bishop Charles Golden of Nashville, Tenn., were blocked by ushers at both front and side doors of the Galloway church. On the same day, seven ministers were arrested as they and two Negro youths tried to enter Capitol Street Methodist church, where several integrated groups previously have been turned away. Grellinger of Green Bay, Wis., administers Confirmation to children of migrant workers in St. Joseph's church, Sturgeon Bay. They were among some 500 children who made their Confirmation and received their First Holy Communion in two churches of the Green Bay diocese. The rites climaxed the diocese's 17th annual apostolate to migrant workers in the state. The children received their instructions for the Sacraments from about 200 lay volunteers, who also taught hundreds of other youths and adults. Several centers are operated by the diocese for the spiritual and material welfare of thousands of Spanish-speaking farm workers who come to Wisconsin for the Summer harvest. Here a bystander, about to be restrained, grabs the arm of a picket in front of an East Side grade school. While a few people were knocked on the ground, order was restored quickly at this location. At the Murray Hill school, however, an unruly crowd of about 400 -- mostly young men -- stopped scheduled picketing with a barrage of eggs, fruit and bottles. Description: Text transcribed from caption: P-30757 SOLUTION SEEN FOR "WORST REFUGEE PROBLEM" CALCUTTA, India -- Many Indian children have never known anything but the squalor surrounding the Sealdah railway station at Calcutta, India, where more than 1,200 families -- nearly 8,000 persons -- have lived since the 1947 partition of India and Pakistan. Their plight has been termed the "worst refugee problem in the world." But through a resettlement program now underway, hope for a better life exists. Church representations and the Indian government have completed long negotiations to establish a site 25 miles north of Calcutta, where refugees totally without employment will build homes and be given material aid. Others will be given assistance in locating within the greater city area. The first several hundred refugee families were moved in March and by early June it is expected all will be resettled. The World Council of Churches has appealed to member Churches for $500,000 to finance the program, which is being handled by the Bengal Refugee Service, an agency of the National Christian Council of India. Description: Text transcribed from caption: P-30567 "FREEDOM SCHOOLS" HELD FOR BOYCOTTING STUDENTS NEW YORK -- Several hundred "Freedom Schools," most of them located in Protestant churches, were established throughout New York City during the boycott held in protest to racial imbalance in the public schools. Here, at Grace Congregational church in Harlem, the Freedom School class was composed of Negro and Puerto Rican students; many white students also took part in the boycott and most Freedom School classes were well integrated. Raymond J. Davis, left, general director if [sic. of] the interdenominational mission society, attended a reception during which the SIM's new French magazine, Champion, was dedicated. Over 500 people, churchmen and representatives of several African nations, attended. Welcoming the SIM official was the Rev. Gin Maigari, (second from left) president of the Association of Evangelical Churches of West Africa, who cited the independence of Nigeria and expressed gratitude that the SIM "is still willing to help our young nation in many ways, especially spiritually." Copies of the new magazine are being presented here by Mademoiselle G. Joly of France, editor. At right is E.E. Esua, general secretary of the Nigeria Union of Teachers. At Tampa, Fla, a Protestant Cuban Refugee Center -- supported by seven denominations, several civic groups and individuals -- has operated for three years, providing assistance in the form of direct aid, as seen in the distribution of blankets to youngsters (top photo), and through such activities as English classes (bottom photo), to aid the newcomers in their transition to a new way of life. Miss Agnes Malloy, a Methodist missionary in Cuba for nearly 20 years, directs operations at the Tampa center, which has aided 5,115 refugees since its establishment. Description: Text transcribed from caption: EO-30523 CATHEDRAL FILLED AS QUEEN OF GREECE ATTENDS SERVICES NEW YORK -- Queen Frederika of Greece (center, right) and her 21-year-old daughter, Irene, stand as the Doxology begins at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New York. Some 2,300 persons attended the service, including leaders of the Greek diplomatic community. The Queen and her daughter sat on thrones at the front of the cathedral. Metropolitan Germanos of Hierapolis extended a welcome in the absence of Archbishop Iakovos, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of North and South America, who was ill. Several United Nations and U.S. dignitaries attended a luncheon for the Queen, after which she left for Washington, D.C., to meet with President and Mrs. Johnson. Title: Priest war hero dies at 58.
Description: Text transcribed from caption: C-30748 PRIEST WAR HERO DIES AT 58 WORCESTER, Mass. -- Father Joseph T. O'Callahan of Worcester, the only American military chaplain to get the Congressional Medal of Honor--the nation's highest and rarest decoration for courage--died at the age of 58. Left photo shows the priest receiving the Medal of Honor in 1946 from President Truman at the White House. Father O'Callahan, a faculty member of Holy Cross College in Worcester for nearly 20 years, died on the eve of the 19th anniversary of the Japanese suicide attack on the aircraft carrier, Franklin, off the coast of Kobe on March 19, 1945. He received the medal for his heroism during that attack--beyond the call of duty--in helping to save the ship and the lives of men. The roofs of several churches and temples were blown off and a number of Christian school buildings were destroyed. Churches throughout Ceylon were taking part in the emergency relief program.
