- PP-22643 POLICE ARREST DR. KING FOR "LOITERING" MONTGOMERY, Ala.-- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., is hustled off to jail by Montgomery police where he was detained for 15 minutes on a charge of loitering. Dr. King, leader of the Negro boycott against Jim Crow buses here in 1956, was arrested outside a City Hall courtroom where he had gone to attend a hearing for a Negro accused of attacking an integration leader. The 29-year-old pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist church here accused the police of beating and kicking him. He was released in $100 bond. - Description
- 18,500 Jam Garden for Graham Crusade. New York--Some 18,500 persons jammed Madison Square Garden to hear Evangelist Billy Graham open his six-weeks New York crusade. The evangelist spoke for 45 minutes from a nine-foor platform erected at one end of the huge arena. He will give a series of Gospel sermons every night during the crusade. After his address at the 90-minute rally, some 485 men, women and teenagers approached the rostrum to make "decisions for Christ," the largest number to do so at the opening of any Graham crusade in this country. Mr. Graham was invited to come this city by the Protestant Council of the City of New York.

- New York--A peaceful pre-Independence Day demonstration for racial equality was held by some 500 clergymen and members of the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. The placard-carrying demonstrators marched for 45 minutes in a City Hall Plaza area, then heard addresses by Mayor Robert F. Wagner, center, and Dr. W. Eugene Houston, left, a Harlem pastor who heads the presbytery's new commission on religion and race. The Mayor called for enactment of President Kennedy's civil rights proposals and pledged continuing efforts toward greater racial equality in New York City. Dr. Houston warned against the city "dragging its feet"on integration and called for acceleration of school desegregation.

- Description
- Columbia, Mo. -- These Columbia high school students are typical of the thousands of teen-agers and elementary school youngsters who took part in trick or treat fun for the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) on Halloween night. Largely church-sponsored, the project is an annual affair conducted to help the hungry and sick children abroad with hospital care and food. The movement started in 1950 by the Rev. Clyde Allison, pastor of the Bridesburg Presbyterian church in Philadelphia. Today, the interfaith project benefits millions of youngsters in all parts of the world.

- 20,000 at Graham Honolulu Rally.
- Description
- Honolulu, T.H.--American Evangelist Billy Graham addresses some 20,000 persons in Honolulu Stadium here. It was his only public rally in Hawaii. The cosmopolitan throng consisted of Caucasians, Hawaiians, Japanese, Chinese, Koreans, Negroes and Filipinos. Sprinkled about the stadium's field are camera fans shooting pictures of Mr. Graham as he speaks. In response to his invitation to "make decisions for Christ" an estimated 2,000 marched to the pulpit. Mr. Graham came here on his way home from an eight-week tour of India, the Philippines, Hong Kong, Formosa, Tokyo and Korea.

- Hattiesburg, Miss.--Posters in the window of the Hattiesburg, Miss. offices of the National Council of Churches' Mississippi Delta Ministry call attention to various phases of the long-range relief, rehabilitation and education program among impoverished Negroes and whites. Hailed by many and criticized by others, largely for its encouragement of the Negro voter registration and efforts to organize laborers, the Ministry is the first such project in this country to receive support from the World Council of Churches. Headquartered in Greenville, Ministry centers also are maintained in Cleveland, Hattiesburg and McComb, Miss.

- These nine American Protestant leaders left here March 9 to visit Moscow where they will hold talks with Christian leaders there. Their 10-day trip marks the first phase of a two-way visit that will bring Russian churchmen to this country next June as guests of the National Council of Churches.
