The seminarians, and five Lutheran professors, marched and disturbed anti-discrimination literature outside a hotel where Gov. Wallace held a press conference. - Hunger strike for civil rights.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30988 HUNGER STRIKE FOR CIVIL RIGHTS MEDIA, Pa. -- The Rev. Clayton K. Hewett, Episcopal clergyman of Morton, Pa., takes part in a healing service of Holy Unction from his cot in a county jail annex at Media, Pa. The clergyman went on a prolonged hunger strike to protest racial segregation in public schools after he was arrested in demonstrations at Chester, Pa. The service is conducted by another Episcopal clergyman, the Rev. John Black of Philadelphia. After nearly two weeks -- the last few days during which Mr. Hewett went into a “complete fast,” without food or liquid -- physicians ordered his transfer to a hospital in Chester. The clergyman’s wife, who said she and their six children “think he’s 100 per cent correct,” said his state of dehydration made it necessary to administer liquids intravenously in the hospital, though he was continuing to refuse solids. The Rev. Bruce W. Klunder, a Student Christian Union leader on Cleveland area campuses, was killed as he threw himself onto the ground behind a bulldozer. Three other demonstrators had jumped in front of the bulldozer and it backed up over the minister. The operator of the machine said he didn’t know Mr. Klunder was in his path. Hewett, 30 pounds lighter after an 18-day hunger strike in protest to racial segregation in schools at Chester, Pa., smiles at the youngest of his six children. Six-month-old Maria Theresa is held by another daughter, Darrale Jeanne, 13. Mrs. Hewett is at right. The clergyman, with one arm in a sling, ended his fast after Pennsylvania Governor William Scranton launched an effort to solve the Chester school segregation problem. He was arrested on several charges during a protest demonstration and after 10 days in jail, the last three in “complete fast” without liquids, was hospitalized. Auxiliary Bishop Raymond P. Hillinger of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago (right) presents the first John F. Kennedy Award to Dr. Blake. Other participants in the dinner included the Rev. Ulysses B. Blakeley, pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Chicago, who said grace, and Rabbi Irving J. Rosenbaum of the Chicago Loop Synagogue, who delivered the benediction. Dr. Blake, a leader of the National Council of Churches' anti-discrimination effort and a personal participant in integration demonstrations, called on American religious groups to recognize their responsibility to lead the first fight against racial injustice. - Text transcribed from caption: P-31238 HATTIESBURG RACE EFFORT CONTINUING HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Scenes of last January remained vivid in July, as the nation’s most comprehensive civil rights bill became law. Since minister, rabbis and Negroes of the community staged prolonged picketing in Hattiesburg, Miss., to protest voter registration practices an effort has been continued there on an interreligious, interracial basis to increase the number of registered Negro voters. The pattern of civil rights demonstrations across the nation is mirrored in the scenes here: a preparatory briefing in a local church (top left), prayer (top right) and petitioning God’s guidance through song, with hand’s linked to symbolize the united effort (bottom left) and peaceful picketing (bottom right). Local authorities, who initially permitted the demonstration within a specified area, later arrested nine United Presbyterian ministers and a Disciples of Christ clergyman on charges of disorderly conduct for having refused to follow police directions. - Riot erupts over Cleveland school integration.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30547 RIOT ERUPTS OVER CLEVELAND SCHOOL INTEGRATION CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Several clergymen joined picket lines in Cleveland, Ohio, to demonstrate in support of full school integration. Here a bystander, about to be restrained, grabs the arm of a picket in front of an East Side grade school. While a few people were knocked on the ground, order was restored quickly at this location. At the Murray Hill school, however, an unruly crowd of about 400 -- mostly young men -- stopped scheduled picketing with a barrage of eggs, fruit and bottles. Police had to use their clubs to stop the attack. Integration leaders called off the demonstration in order to avert further violence. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-NY-1E-64-NBM)
