- Philadelphia religious leaders act on race.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-31124 PHILADELPHIA RELIGIOUS LEADERS ACT ON RACE PHILADELPHIA- Protestant and Roman Catholic bishops make public the first interreligious statement on racial justice and religious harmony ever issued in Philadelphia. Shown left to right are Methodist Bishop Fred Pierce Corson of Philadelphia, head of the World Methodist Council; Catholic Archbishop John J. Krol of Philadelphia; and Protestant Episcopal Bishop Robert L. DeWitt of Pennsylvania. The joint statement was also signed by local Baptist, Lutheran, Quaker, United Presbyterian, United Church of Christ, and Jewish leaders. For the first time in this city, many of them attended a Mass offered for racial and religious harmony by Archbishop Krol in the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul.
