Description: Bettie J. Durrah is a Presbyterian elder, born in Newman, Georgia, a fourth-generation African American Presbyterian. She completed a bachelor's degree in Biology at Spelman College, and holds two master's degrees, from Clark Atlanta University and Georgia State University. From 1995 to 2004 she served in the PC(USA) Women's Ministries as national staff in the Synods of Living Waters, Mid-Atlantic, South Atlantic, and Trinity. An elder at Radcliffe Presbyterian Church (Atlanta, Ga.), she has served as moderator of Presbyterian Women at congregation, presbytery, and synod levels; as moderator of the Presbytery of Greater Atlanta; and was a commissioner to the 2000 General Assembly.

Description: Interview (part one) conducted by Sonia Prescott with Edwin Ayres Bethea and Wendell Charles Love on July 3, 2023. Edwin was born in Birmingham, Alabama on May 15, 1931 to Monroe Ayres Bethea and Marzetta Pressley Bethea. Edwin spent his early childhood years with his grandparents and other paternal family members in Millers Ferry, Wilcox County, Alabama. Calvin B. Bethea (born 1863) and Annie McArthur Bethea (born 1868), Edwin’s paternal grandparents, were sharecroppers on the properties of Judge William Henderson in Millers Ferry. Edwin was educated in one of the six mission schools in Wilcox County supported by the Freedman’s Bureau and the United Presbyterian Church of North America. As his parents had been before him, Edwin was a student at the Millers Ferry Normal and Industrial School. In the interviews, Edwin provides a firsthand account of the Black Presbyterian experience in Wilcox County.

From 1968 to 1983 he and Jim Costen led the Harbison Development Corporation, a land-development corporation for the new community of Harbison, S.C.

Dr. Clifton Kirkpatrick is an ordained minister who served for fifteen years as the Director of the Worldwide Ministries Division before becoming Stated Clerk. His other leadership roles included Co-moderator of the General Assembly Special Committee on the Belhar Confession and member of the Board of Directors of the Covenant Network of Presbyterians. Description: Pearl Rugless O'Meally and Mary Ludlow were on the nominating committee that called Janie Spahr to serve as pastor of Downtown United Presbyterian Church and early members of That All May Freely Serve (TAMFS). TAMFS began in 1993 after Rev. Jane Adams Spahr, a lesbian minister, was banned by the Permanent Judicial Commission from accepting a call to serve as a pastor of Downtown United Presbyterian Church (Rochester, NY). Downtown Church formed TAMFS ministry in response, electing Spahr to serve as a "lesbian evangelist" to the PC(USA), and advocating for the full inclusion of LGBTQIA+ Presbyterians.
