- Text transcribed from caption: P-29689 CHURCH PICKETED IN HOUSTON HOUSTON, Tex. -- An “all-out” picketing campaign against the 3,600-member all-white First Baptist church in Houston, Texas, was launched by the Congress for Racial Equality. The pastor of the church is Dr. K. Owen White, president of the 10-million-member Southern Baptist Convention. Though Negroes have been admitted to worship services, pickets protested the denial of six membership applications. IN a statement issued after the first application was refused, Dr. White said that in view of existing racial tensions it was believed wise to continue present membership policies. Jesse Jackson, who was among five persons arrested in a rock-throwing confrontation between blacks and police on the University of Illinois Circle Campus in Chicago, uses a police microphone in an attempt to quiet demonstrators. Mr. Jackson and four others were arrested when they refused to lead a group of about 600 demonstrators away from a construction site on the campus. - Text transcribed from caption: PC-31383 MURDERED RIGHTS WORKER ATTENDED NCC SESSIONS OXFORD, Ohio -- Andrew Goodman, 20-year-old New Yorker murdered in Mississippi with two other civil rights workers, is shown attending an orientation lecture at Western College for Women, Oxford, Ohio, before going to the Southern state. The bodies of Mr. Goodman and his companions -- Michael H. Schwerner, 24, another white student from New York, and James E. Chaney, 21, a Meridian, Miss., Negro -- were found buried deep in a dam embankment near Philadelphia, Miss., where they disappeared June 21. All three had attended the advance training sessions at Oxford, conducted by the National Council of Churches' Commission on Religion and Race. KING RECEIVES NOBEL PEACE PRIZE OSLO -- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., of Atlanta, Ga., noted Negro integration leader, is congratulated by Norway’s Crown Prince Harald (left) and King Olav after being presented with the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. Looking on is his wife, Mrs. Coretta King. Dr. King, a Baptist minister, was honored for his non-violent leadership in the civil rights movement. He said he was accepting the award on behalf of the movement and “all men who love peace and brotherhood.” Earlier he had announced that the prize money, about $54,000 would go to aid the struggle for social justice. Dr. King is founder and president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, dedicated to promoting equal rights. - Text transcribed from caption: P-30906 CLEVELAND CHURCH BECOMES ‘FREEDOM SCHOOL’ CLEVELAND -- Cleveland public school students, absent from their regular classes during a boycott in behalf of integration, nevertheless spend their day in a classroom atmosphere. The youngsters are getting a lesson in the meaning of the civil rights movement at a “Freedom School” at the Friendship Baptist church. - Text transcribed from caption: PC-31137 FIREMEN ROUT DEMONSTRATORS IN CHURCH TUSCALOOSA, Ala.-Firemen use high pressure water hoses to rout Negro demonstrators who took refuge in a Baptist church in Tuscaloosa. Some of them retaliated by throwing sticks, bottles, stones and other missiles from the building. Later police fired tear gas shells into the church. More than 90 persons were arrested as police blocked a march into the downtown area. Barred on the ground that they had received no permit to march, about 500 demonstrators retreated into the church.
