- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30963 PRESIDENT URGES RELIGIOUS CIVIL RIGHTS SUPPORT WASHINGTON, D.C. -- America’s religious community was challenged by President Johnson to “reawaken the conscience” of the nation and make the civil rights bill -- which he predicted would pass -- an effective force in the struggle for equal justice. - Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30917 CIVIL RIGHTS DEMONSTRATORS MARCH AT FAIR NEW YORK -- Opening day of the New York World’s Fair featured both organized pomp and ceremony and demands for civil rights by members of the Congress of Racial Equality. Here, members of the Boston, Mass., chapter of CORE march in the shadow of the Unisphere, the fair’s symbol. The Rev. Bruce W. Klunder, a Student Christian Union leader on Cleveland area campuses, was killed as he threw himself onto the ground behind a bulldozer. Six-month-old Maria Theresa is held by another daughter, Darrale Jeanne, 13. Mrs. Hewett is at right. The clergyman, with one arm in a sling, ended his fast after Pennsylvania Governor William Scranton launched an effort to solve the Chester school segregation problem. He was arrested on several charges during a protest demonstration and after 10 days in jail, the last three in “complete fast” without liquids, was hospitalized. The trip followed Assembly approval of a resolution seeking accelerated Christian pressure on Congressmen to force the bill out of committee and onto the floor of the House of Representatives for debate. J. Irwin Miller, outgoing NCC president, (third from right, front row) greets Christian Methodist Episcopal Bishop B. Julian Smith of Chicago and other travelers on their return to Philadelphia. Also welcoming the returning group (second from left) was Dr. Robert W. Spike, executive director of the NCC’s Commission on Religion and Race. Next to Bishop Smith, a vice chairman of the race commission, is Dr. Anna Arnold Hedgeman, special projects coordinator for the commission, and to her right is Dr. R.H.
