Description: Shelton Bishop Waters was an African American Presbyterian minister. Born in 1918 in Pittsburgh, he was educated at Johnson C. Smith University (Charlotte, N.C.) and Lincoln University. From 1947 to 1969 he was pastor of First African Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, serving as moderator of the presbytery in 1965 and moderator of the Synod of the Trinity in 1966. From 1975 to 1985 he was pastor of Northeastern Presbyterian Church (Washington, D.C.). He died in 2013.

Title: Chris Glaser oral history, 2022.
Description: Chris Glaser was raised as an American Baptist in North Hollywood, California. He joined the Presbyterian Church in 1970 while in college at California State University, Northridge. He was an ordained elder at First Presbyterian Church of Van Nuys. From 1976 to 1978, he served as the only openly gay member of the UPCUSA Task Force to Study Homosexuality. From 1977 to 1987, he served as the founding director of the Lazarus Project, a ministry of reconciliation between the church and the LGBTQ community in Los Angeles, located at West Hollywood Presbyterian Church. He also served as the second national coordinator and treasurer of Presbyterians for Lesbian and Gay Concerns (PLGC) and as editor of its newsletters (More Light). Interview covers the 1978 General Assembly, the UPCUSA Task Force to Study Homosexuality, the Lazarus Project, and Presbyterians for Lesbian and Gay Concerns (PLGC).

Title: Edwin Bethea oral history part 1, 2023.
Description: Interview (part one) conducted by Sonia Prescott with Edwin Ayres Bethea and Wendell Charles Love on July 3, 2023. Edwin was born in Birmingham, Alabama on May 15, 1931 to Monroe Ayres Bethea and Marzetta Pressley Bethea. Edwin spent his early childhood years with his grandparents and other paternal family members in Millers Ferry, Wilcox County, Alabama. Calvin B. Bethea (born 1863) and Annie McArthur Bethea (born 1868), Edwin’s paternal grandparents, were sharecroppers on the properties of Judge William Henderson in Millers Ferry. Edwin was educated in one of the six mission schools in Wilcox County supported by the Freedman’s Bureau and the United Presbyterian Church of North America. As his parents had been before him, Edwin was a student at the Millers Ferry Normal and Industrial School. In the interviews, Edwin provides a firsthand account of the Black Presbyterian experience in Wilcox County.

Description: Peter Oddleifson was an elder at Third Presbyterian Church (Rochester, NY), an attorney who contributed to the national LGBTQ movement for equal ordination rights in the PC(USA), and an early member of That All May Freely Serve (TAMFS). TAMFS began in 1993 after Rev. Jane Adams Spahr, a lesbian minister, was banned by the Permanent Judicial Commission from accepting a call to serve as a pastor of Downtown United Presbyterian Church (Rochester, NY). Downtown Church formed TAMFS ministry in response, electing Spahr to serve as a "lesbian evangelist" to the PC(USA), and advocating for the full inclusion of LGBTQIA+ Presbyterians.

Title: Edwin Bethea oral history part 2, 2023.
Description: Interview (part two) conducted by Sonia Prescott with Edwin Ayres Bethea and Wendell Charles Love on July 3, 2023. Edwin was born in Birmingham, Alabama on May 15, 1931 to Monroe Ayres Bethea and Marzetta Pressley Bethea. Edwin spent his early childhood years with his grandparents and other paternal family members in Millers Ferry, Wilcox County, Alabama. Calvin B. Bethea (born 1863) and Annie McArthur Bethea (born 1868), Edwin’s paternal grandparents, were sharecroppers on the properties of Judge William Henderson in Millers Ferry. Edwin was educated in one of the six mission schools in Wilcox County supported by the Freedman’s Bureau and the United Presbyterian Church of North America. As his parents had been before him, Edwin was a student at the Millers Ferry Normal and Industrial School. In the interviews, Edwin provides a firsthand account of the Black Presbyterian experience in Wilcox County.
