- Text transcribed from caption: P-31056 PROTESTANT CIVIL RIGHTS PROCESSION WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Some 270 Protestant ministers and laymen moved in silent, solemn procession from the Lutheran Church of the Reformation on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., to the Capitol, where they urged immediate passage of a strong civil rights bill. Enroute, the marchers paused briefly on the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court building for prayers commemorating the 10th anniversary of the 1954 decision outlawing public school segregation. At right, Dr. Robert W. Spike, director of the National Council of Churches’ Commission on Religion and Race, which sponsored the demonstration, follows Sen. Hubert Humphrey (D.-Minn.) down the Capitol steps. Sen. Humphrey and Sen. Kenneth B. Keating (R.-N.Y.) addressed the gathering, hailing religious support of the bill. - Text transcribed from caption: P-30348 NCC DELEGATES PRESS FOR CIVIL RIGHTS LEGISLATION PHILADELPHIA -- Two busloads of delegates and official visitors, a total of about 80 men and women, left the National Council of Churches’ triennial General Assembly at Philadelphia, Pa., on Dec. 6 for a one-day journey to Washington, D.C., to contact legislators and personally urge speedy passage of pending civil rights legislation. The trip followed Assembly approval of a resolution seeking accelerated Christian pressure on Congressmen to force the bill out of committee and onto the floor of the House of Representatives for debate. J. Irwin Miller, outgoing NCC president, (third from right, front row) greets Christian Methodist Episcopal Bishop B. Julian Smith of Chicago and other travelers on their return to Philadelphia. Also welcoming the returning group (second from left) was Dr. Robert W. Spike, executive director of the NCC’s Commission on Religion and Race. Johnson for NCC leaders to meet with him and discuss measures to expedite passage of the pending bill. With the President are J. Irwin Miller, Columbus, Ind., Disciples of Christ layman who retired as NCC president (seated, left), and his successor, Senior Bishop Reuben H. Mueller of the Evangelical United Brethren Church (seated, center), and, standing left to right: Christian Methodist Episcopal Bishop B. Julian Smith of Chicago, Dr. Robert W. - Text transcribed from caption: P-30651 CHURCH SERVICES PLANNED TO PRESS FOR CIVIL RIGHTS BALTIMORE, Md. -- If the pending civil rights bill hasn't been passed by Easter, daily worship services to express support of the legislation will begin in Washington, D.C. churches in the following week, it was announced at a meeting of the General Board of the National Council of Churches at Baltimore. Dr. Robert W. Spike, executive director of the NCC's Commission on Religion and Race, and Dr. Anna Hedgeman, director of special events for the commission, called for the services by Protestant and Orthodox churches. They said other religions may join in sponsoring the worship and prayer demonstration, participating in an initial mass meeting and then holding their own services. - Text transcribed from caption: PC-31197 RIGHTS BILL THANKSGIVING SERVICE WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Some 200 Protestants, Roman Catholics and Jews joined in an interreligious thanksgiving service to mark the Senate passage of the civil rights bill and to pledge continued efforts on behalf of racial justice. It was held on the lawn of the Methodist Building in Washington, about a block from the Capitol. Reading the Scripture is Bishop Henry C. Bunton of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. Other leaders in the service included Father John F. Cronin, assistant director, National Catholic Welfare Conference’s Social Action Department (center of group at wall). Seated next to him (white robe) is Dean Francis B. Sayre, Jr., of Washington Cathedral (Episcopal). In front of them (bending) is Dr. Robert W. Spike, executive director, National Council of Churches’ Commission on Religion and Race. The service was sponsored by the NCC, the NCWC, the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, and the Theological Students Vigil for Civil Rights. - Text transcribed from caption: P-29790 ‘OPERATION SANDWICH’ AIDS HUNGRY WASHINGTON MARCHERS NEW YORK -- Eighty-thousand cheese sandwiches, with apples and pieces of marble cake, were packed into lunchboxes at Riverside Church in New York City, then rushed in refrigerated trucks to the nation’s capital for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. The project to “feed the multitude” of hungry marchers was sponsored by the National Council of Churches’ Commission on Religion and Race. At top, Dr. Robert W. Spike, executive director of the commission, and Dr. Anna Arnold Hedgeman, NCC coordinator of March activities, dedicate the lunches “for the nourishment of thousands” who went to Washington “to say with their bodies and souls that ‘we shall overcome,’” racial injustice. - Text transcribed from caption: P-31163 NCC OFFICIALS FACE MISSISSIPPI PRESS JACKSON, Miss. -- Christian motivation behind civil rights programs in Mississippi is stressed by two National Council of Churches race relations leaders as they meet reporters in the concourse of the airport at Jackson. Dr. Eugene Carson Blake, left, chief executive officer of the United Presbyterian Church in the U.S.A. and chairman of the NCC’s Commission on Religion and Race, and Dr. Robert W. Spike, executive director of the commission, explained the summer student program which will bring some 500-1000 college students to the state to conduct “freedom schools” for Negroes, and a long-range anti-poverty “Delta Ministry” to be launched in the fall under NCC auspices. The Council was conducting orientation sessions for summer program volunteers, who will work under the direction of civil rights groups in the democracy education and voter registration effort. - Text transcribed from caption: P-30434 STUDENTS CONCERNED WITH RACE, CHURCH MISSION ATHENS, Ohio -- Civil rights and the church’s mission were major concerns of 3,000 Protestant and Orthodox youths at the 19th Quadrennial Ecumenical Student Conference at Ohio University. Left photo shows two leaders at a session on the race question. They are Clarence Mitchell, director of the NAACP’s Washington office (foreground); and Dr. Robert W. Spike, executive director of the National Council of Churches’ Commission on Religion and Race. In right photo is the Very Rev. Alexander Schmemann, dean and chaplain of St. Vladimir’s Russian Orthodox Theological Seminary, Crestwood, N.Y., who gave a series of lectures on the “Christian Mission for the Life of the World,” the conference’s main theme.
