- Text transcribed from caption: P-30735 UCC LEADERS EXPRESS CIVIL RIGHTS SUPPORT WASHINGTON, D.C. -- An expression of United Church of Christ support for passage of the pending civil rights bill was carried to Senator Hubert H. Humphrey (D.-Minn.), second from left, by four national leaders of the United Church of Christ. The churchmen were among more than 100 delegates of the denomination, a group described as a "first wave" of ministers and laymen who traveled to Washington, D.C., to urge passage of the legislation "without crippling amendments." With Sen. Humphrey, the Senate majority whip, from left, are Dr. Ray Gibbons of New York, director of the UCC Council for Christian Social Action; Dr. Ben M. Herbster, New York, UCC Council for Christian Social Action; Dr. Ben M. Herbster, New York, UCC president; the Rev. Nicholas Hood of Detroit, chairman of the denomination's Committee for Racial Justice Now, and Dr. Truman B. Douglass, New York, executive vice president of the UCC Board for Homeland Ministries.
