- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30963 PRESIDENT URGES RELIGIOUS CIVIL RIGHTS SUPPORT WASHINGTON, D.C. -- America’s religious community was challenged by President Johnson to “reawaken the conscience” of the nation and make the civil rights bill -- which he predicted would pass -- an effective force in the struggle for equal justice. A total of 177 Protestant, Catholic and Jewish clergy and laymen heard the President in the East Room of the White House on the day following a mass interreligious convocation at Georgetown University to demand passage of the civil rights bill. Sponsors of the convocation were the National Council of Churches, National Catholic Welfare Conference and Synagogue Council of America. Left to right are: Catholic Archbishop Patrick A. - Text transcribed from caption: PC-31160 CLERGY LEAD CIVIL RIGHTS WASHINGTON MARCH WASHINGTON, D. C. -- Religious, labor and civil rights leaders from New York City came to the nation’s capital [capitol] for a March on Washington to urge early passage of the civil rights bill without “crippling amendments.” Some of the 1,200 marchers are shown arriving at Union Station. They went to Capitol Hill to meet with Congressmen and other government officials, held a prayer vigil at the Lincoln Memorial and a rally at the Washington Monument. Co-chairmen of the march were Father Edward T. Dugan of the Resurrection Catholic church, the Rev. Eugene Houston of Rendall Memorial Presbyterian church, and Rabbi Alfred L. Friedman of Union Temple of Brooklyn. The three clergymen serve as co-chairmen of the Committee on Race and Religion of New York’s Committee of Religious Leaders. He is shown leaving a hospital there after being treated for severe head and body injuries. The rabbi is accompanied (left) by the Rev. Charles W. Rawlings, director of the Cleveland Church Federation’s Office of Religion and Race. - Text transcribed from caption: PC-30532 UNIVERSITY CHAPLAINS "WALK FOR RECONCILIATION" DETROIT, Mich. -- Protestant, Roman Catholic and Jewish chaplains and their assistants from Wayne State University conducted a "walk for reconciliation" through downtown Detroit, Mich., to express an "ecumenical imperative toward human solidarity" in all areas of life, particularly race relations. Prayers were offered at each stop on their route -- a store-front church, a theater, a campus religions [sic. religious] center and an apartment building. Participants included, from left to right: the Rev. Shown left to right are Methodist Bishop Fred Pierce Corson of Philadelphia, head of the World Methodist Council; Catholic Archbishop John J. Krol of Philadelphia; and Protestant Episcopal Bishop Robert L. DeWitt of Pennsylvania. The joint statement was also signed by local Baptist, Lutheran, Quaker, United Presbyterian, United Church of Christ, and Jewish leaders. For the first time in this city, many of them attended a Mass offered for racial and religious harmony by Archbishop Krol in the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul. - Text transcribed from caption: PC-31197 RIGHTS BILL THANKSGIVING SERVICE WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Some 200 Protestants, Roman Catholics and Jews joined in an interreligious thanksgiving service to mark the Senate passage of the civil rights bill and to pledge continued efforts on behalf of racial justice. It was held on the lawn of the Methodist Building in Washington, about a block from the Capitol. Reading the Scripture is Bishop Henry C. Bunton of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church. Other leaders in the service included Father John F. Cronin, assistant director, National Catholic Welfare Conference’s Social Action Department (center of group at wall). Seated next to him (white robe) is Dean Francis B. Sayre, Jr., of Washington Cathedral (Episcopal). In front of them (bending) is Dr. Robert W. Spike, executive director, National Council of Churches’ Commission on Religion and Race. The service was sponsored by the NCC, the NCWC, the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, and the Theological Students Vigil for Civil Rights. LeRoy Collins (center), director of the Community Relations Service established by the Civil Rights Act, presides at a session during a four-day consultation at Warrenton, Va., where some 150 Protestant, Roman Catholic and Jewish clergy and laymen discussed ways to implement the Civil Rights Act and the new anti-poverty program. - Text transcribed from caption: PC-31434 PRESIDENT ADDRESSES NEW COMMUNITY RELATIONS COMMITTEE WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Members of the new National Citizens Committee for Community Relations, a panel including many Protestant, Catholic and Jewish clergymen, swarm around President Johnson after he spoke to them in the White House Rose Garden. Americans were called on by the President to reject the "indefensible counsel" being offered by divisive forces in society and to work for racial peace through strict adherence to law and order. The Community Relations committee, under the aegis of the Department of Commerce, will serve primarily as a consulting board but also will figure in the negotiation of local problems. - Text transcribed from caption: PC-31592 INTERRELIGIOUS 'GOOD NEIGHBOR' DRIVE CLEVELAND -- Protestant, Roman Catholic and Jewish leaders in Cleveland cooperated in a one-week drive to get church and synagogue members to sign a "Good Neighbor" pledge. The effort was sponsored by the interreligious Greater Cleveland Conference on Religion and Race. Mayor Ralph S. Locher of Cleveland is shown signing a proclamation calling for the voluntary pledges. Looking on are from left, Father Vincent P. Haas, moderator, Catholic Interracial Council of Cleveland; the Rev. B. Bruce Whittemore, executive secretary, Cleveland Area Church Federation; and Rabbi Alan S. Green, Jewish Community Federation.
