Description: Text transcribed from caption: P-27052 NEGROES PRAY FOR JUSTICE ALBANY, Ga. -- Negro demonstrators held a prayer meeting in front of the Albany (Ga.) City Hall to appeal for a just verdict for 11 Freedom Riders on trial there. Police form a cordon in the rear to forestall any violence. The Negro demonstrators, whose number sometimes rose to 700, held mass meetings in the Shiloh Baptist church. Description: Text transcribed from caption: PC-32110 ATLANTA CITIZENS HONOR DR. KING ATLANTA -- Dr. Martin Luther King’s young daughter, Yolande, stands on tip-toe but isn’t quite tall enough to see over the table decorations as she tries to have a word with her parents. The occasion was a testimonial dinner for the noted Negro integration leader in recognition of his winning the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize. The dinner was attended by a sell-out audience of 1,500 guests, about half of them white. It was sponsored by about 100 leading religious and civic residents of Atlanta, where Dr. King was born and where he is co-pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist church. Title: Convicted of slaying Mrs. King.
Description: Text transcribed from caption: PC-46021 CONVICTED OF SLAYING MRS. KING ATLANTA -- Marcus Wayne Chenault (right) is escorted from court in Atlanta after he was convicted and sentenced to die in the electric chair for the murder of Mrs. Martin Luther King, Sr., and a church deacon at Ebenezer Baptist Church, where Mrs. King’s husband is a pastor. Mr. Chenault, a 23-year-old black college student from Dayton, Ohio, clapped his hands as the jury convicted him, and blew kisses at the court as the sentence was read. Grinning, Mr. Chenault told the court, “My name is Servant Jacob. I was ordered here by my God, my father and my master.” At the time of the murder, he claimed he had been sent by his “god” to confront Mr. King, Sr., father of the slain civil rights leader. Edwin was born in Birmingham, Alabama on May 15, 1931 to Monroe Ayres Bethea and Marzetta Pressley Bethea. Edwin spent his early childhood years with his grandparents and other paternal family members in Millers Ferry, Wilcox County, Alabama. Calvin B. Bethea (born 1863) and Annie McArthur Bethea (born 1868), Edwin’s paternal grandparents, were sharecroppers on the properties of Judge William Henderson in Millers Ferry. Edwin was educated in one of the six mission schools in Wilcox County supported by the Freedman’s Bureau and the United Presbyterian Church of North America. As his parents had been before him, Edwin was a student at the Millers Ferry Normal and Industrial School. In the interviews, Edwin provides a firsthand account of the Black Presbyterian experience in Wilcox County.
