- Text transcribed from caption: C-20114. FIRE DESTROYS HARTFORD CATHEDRAL. HARTFORD, CONN. St. Joseph's Cathedral here looks like a hollow shell after an early morning fire destroyed the 64-year-old mother church of the Hartford Archdiocese. The blaze, which started in the basement below the altar, was discovered during the 7 a.m. mass. More than 135 firemen battled the flames for five hours in 16-degree temperature. Damage was estimated at $5,000,000. A few hours earlier, a midnight blaze destroyed another Catholic church -- St. Patrick's in the city's business area. - Text transcribed from caption: PI-20099. THE DOME OF THE ROCK. This sacred rock in a grotto of the Moslem Mosque in Jerusalem traditionally marks the site where Solomon's Temple once stood. The mosque, first built in the 7th century A.D., is also known as the Dome of the Rock. According to tradition this rock also was the site where patriarch Abraham was about to sacrifice his son Isaac, when an angel of the Lord forbade him. ANCHORAGE, ALASKA -- Dr. Eugene Carson Blake of Philadelphia, President of the National Council of Churches, is fitted with arctic gear at Elmendorf Air Force Base here during his Christmas visit to American servicemen and chaplains of the Alaskan command. Assisting him is Chaplain (Col.) Martin C. Foch of the Alaskan Command. Dr. Blake made the journey as spiritual ambassador of the National Council's 30 Protestant and Eastern Orthodox Communions and their 144,000 local churches.
