- Title
- PC(USA) delegation to the Vatican, March 22, 2001.
- Description
- In March 2001, fifteen PC(USA) representatives travelled to the Vatican, on a return visit from the prior December's first-ever formal meeting. The outcome of the meetings was a joint statement in which all parties resolved to find agreement on the doctrine of justification, to recognize each other's baptisms, and to renounce Reformation-era mutual denunciations. Cliff Kirkpatrick, then stated clerk of the PC(USA), echoed the theme of Christian unity that John Paul II put forward in the 1995 encyclical Ut Unum Sint: "It is our deepest hope that the third millennium of Christian history will be the millennium of the reuniting of the broken body of Christ."

- Pope visits prison, says Mass.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30854 POPE VISITS PRISON, SAYS MASS ROME -- Pope Paul VI speaks to about 1,200 inmates on a visit to Regina Coeli (Queen of Heaven) prison in Rome where he celebrated a Mass for them. Some prisoners kneel near the Pope as he talks, while others look down from corridors overlooking the jail’s rotunda. The pontiff was warmly greeted and applauded by the prisoners, many of whom wept. He told them: “You want freedom, welfare, and I feel powerless to give you these things you want so much.” The inmates later joined the Pope in reciting the Our Father and the Hail Mary. Pope Paul repeatedly blessed the prisoners around him and before leaving distributed gifts to all. He was the second pontiff to visit the penal institution which includes men convicted of manslaughter, armed robbery and kidnapping. The first Pope to visit the jail was the late John XXIII in 1958. - Pope in Holy Week rites.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-30797 POPE IN HOLY WEEK RITES ROME -- Pope Paul VI is shown in Maundy Thursday and Good Friday ceremonies as he led the world's faithful in commemorating the Passion and Crucifixion of Christ. At top, left, the pontiff carries a large wooden cross up the Palatine Hill in Rome after participating in the Via Crucis, or Way of the Cross. The Pope prayed before each of the 14 Stations of the Cross situated at the Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine and the foot of Palatine Hill. At top, right, the Pope prays before one of the Stations in the Good Friday rite. At bottom, left, the pontiff prepares to wash the feet of 13 Latin American seminarians at the traditional Holy Thursday ceremony in the Basilica of St. John Lateran. In right photo the Pope kisses the feet of one of the seminarians. Known as the Mandatum, the foot-washing rite commemorates Christ's action at the institution of the Holy Eucharist when he washed the feet of the Apostles. - Pope in helicopter waits for take-off.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-31402 POPE IN HELICOPTER WAITS FOR TAKE-OFF CASTEL GANDOLFO, Italy -- Pope Paul VI sits in a helicopter at Castel Gandolfo awaiting take-off of a 75-mile flight to Orvieto where he participated in ceremonies marking the 700th anniversary of the world-wide Feastday of Corpus Christi. In making the flight, Paul VI became the first Pope to use a helicopter. He also is the first pontiff to travel by airplane -- a precedent he established in January when he visited the Holy Land. In Orvieto, the Pope celebrated Mass and delivered a brief homily in the town's ancient cathedral. He returned to the papal summer villa by automobile.
