- At Little 'Hoppers' Hospital.
- Description
- The Rev. P. B. Colthurst, an Anglican clergyman, is shown with one of his patients at the "Little Hoppers Hospital." In 1898, the Rev. Richard Wilson, of Stepney, went into the hopfields to see how his hopping parishioners were faring. He was horrified to see that they were uncared for, and that a mother had just lost her baby through lack of medical attention. From that moment the "Little Hoppers Hospital" was born, and from an early start in one room the hospital is now being - though, as a notice states, it is not nationalized. About the year 1907 a public house ("Rose and Crown") in Five Oak Green, near Tonbridge, was bought by voluntary help, and this has now become the hospital - and the old skittle alley is one of the wards. Only children are cared for, although immediate medical attention would be given to anybody that needed it. This picture shows the old inn sign - now with a different motto.

- Bomb damages Westminster Hall.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-45695 BOMB DAMAGES WESTMINSTER HALL LONDON -- Flames and smoke pour from Westminster Hall, the most historic part of the Houses of Parliament in London, after a bomb blast set off a fire which damaged the 900-year-old chamber. Police said that the bombing was the work of the Provisional wing of the Irish Republican Army. A man with an Irish accent telephoned a local news agency, giving six minutes warning of the explosion and using a code word of the IRA to identify a genuine alert. For several hours after the early morning blast, smoke shrouded Big Ben (left) as firemen fought the fire fed by an ignited gas main. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (B-LON-6C-74-DS)

- Billy Graham plans British crusade.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30781 BILLY GRAHAM PLANS BRITISH CRUSADE LONDON -- American evangelist Billy Graham addresses 3,000 clergy and laymen in Westminster as he reveals plans for a major crusade in Great Britain in 1965 or 1966. The Southern Baptist minister said the definite scheduling of the campaign--expected to last 12 weeks--depends on the availability of Earls Court Stadium, which seats 25,000 persons. Mr. Graham said he had been invited to preach in England by a group of 70 laymen who are expected to underwrite the $500,000 crusade. Expressing fears that the country’s moral standards were in danger, the evangelist said he was shocked by crime and immorality statistics in Britain and that England needed a “moral and spiritual awakening.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (U-3D-64-NAB)
