Eighteen -- 13 priests and 5 Brothers -- were deported because, according to Francois Duvalier's government, they had documents "likely to imperil the security of the state." At left, Jesuits debark from plane at Montreal Airport; at right is Father Robert Jean, showing the effects of detention and abrupt deportation. Vatican Radio said that the Duvalier dictatorship had "done much to the detriment of the Church in Haiti in recent years." Since 1959 Duvalier has expelled three bishops and 17 priests on various pretexts. The Canadian Jesuits started their Haiti mission in 1953. - Text transcribed from caption: C-30610 VICTIMS OF HAITI'S ANTI-CHURCH REGIME MONTREAL, Canada -- Tired and showing signs of strain, the first group of Jesuits expelled by Haiti's dictatorial regime returns to provincial headquarters in Montreal. - Punjab Sikhs form colorful colony.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PUNJAB SIKHS FORM COLORFUL COLONY #1545 VANCOUVER, B.C. -- Some 40 years ago pioneering Sikhs from Punjab came here and settled around Vancouver, New Westminster and Victoria. Although they have become successful businessmen and farmers, they have kept many of their Punjab ways, most evident of which is their religion. Here a venerable priest, barefooted and cross-legged, reads the Granth, the sacred book of the Sikhs. It is a compilation of the songs of Nanak, who founded the religion 450 years ago, and those of other poets.
