- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-32166 ACTOR CHARGED WITH VATICAN BOMBING VATICAN CITY -- Charged by Italian police with the bombing of a Vatican entrance was actor Claudio Volonte, 26, shown wearing a beard for a role in “The Deputy.” He is a brother of actor-producer Gian Maria Volonte, who tried to stage the controversial play in the basement of a deconsecrated Rome church. The drama, which depicts Pope Pius XII as failing to denounce publicly Nazi anti-Jewish crimes, was banned by the Rome Prefecture under the Vatican-Italy concordat which protects the “sacred character” of the Eternal City. - Police block 'The Deputy' in Rome.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: C-32146 POLICE BLOCK ‘THE DEPUTY’ IN ROME ROME -- A demonstrator is held back by police after fighting broke out outside a deconsecrated church in Rome where a private performance of “The Deputy” was to be held. Police blocked off entrance to the former church’s basement on the grounds that no theater permit had been issued. Fighting erupted when about 100 persons began jeering police. The play was to have been presented by a private theater club, Teatro Scelta, to an invited audience. Fifteen actors and their director staged a sit-in strike in the improvised basement theater to protest the police action. Written by the German author, Rolf Hochhuth, the drama depicts Pope Pius XII as failing to denounce publicly the Nazi persecution of Jews. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-2C-65-NAB)
