- Babs Miller oral history, 2023.
- Description
- Oral history with Babs Miller, parish associate at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church (Austin, Tex.), on her career in ministry, including with Metropolitan Community Church (Austin, Tex.) during the AIDS crisis of the 1980s, and as an evangelist with That All May Freely Serve (TAMFS) in the 2000s. Babs Miller is a Presbyterian minister, ordained by Mission Presbytery in 2014. Born in Victoria, Texas in 1942, she attended the Presbyterian School for Christian Education (Richmond, Va.) in the 1960s, and worked as a Christian educator, a social worker, and a high school teacher in Texas. She went to Austin Theological Seminary from 1987 to 1990, came out as a lesbian, and began work with Metropolitan Community Church (Austin, Tex.). From about 2004 to 2012 she was an evangelist with That All May Freely Serve (TAMFS). She has served as parish associate at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church (Austin, Tex.) since 2014, and continues advocacy for GLBTQ+ rights, in particular protection of trans youth and their families threatened by Texas state law codifying trans health therapies as child abuse. Starting in 2015, Miller was part of the group at St. Andrew's, as part of the Austin Sanctuary Network, declaring public sanctuary for migrants, and helped a mother and child, Hilda and Ivan, seek asylum.

- Key moments had Protestant settings.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30267 KEY MOMENTS HAD PROTESTANT SETTINGS Key moments in the political life of the late President Kennedy came amid Protestant settings. Above, the man destined to become the nation’s first Roman Catholic chief executive speaks in October, 1960, before the Ministers Association of Greater Houston. Addressing 500 clergymen he delineated his thoughts on separation of Church and State. Below, the photo shows what must have been a heart-warming moment for the young leader. It was provided by Dr. E. S. James of Dallas, left, clergyman-editor of the Texas Baptist Standard. Dr. James had opposed election of a Roman Catholic president in 1960. He came to the White House in February, 1963, however, to tell Mr. Kennedy that “it was a pleasure” to note that religious bias had been scrupulously avoided by the administration. The Baptist leader said the Catholic chief executive was “determined to abide by the Constitutional provision for the separation of Church and State.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (SD-11E-63-W)

- Another shock for Americans.
- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: PC-30292 ANOTHER SHOCK FOR AMERICANS DALLAS, Texas -- The second chapter in the tragedy of a nation. This dramatic photograph shows Jack Ruby, a Dallas nightclub operator at right, as he thrust a gun forward to shoot Lee Harvey Oswald, accused slayer of President Kennedy. The killing of Oswald was condemned by most responsible Americans as, in the words of a newspaper editorial, “a blot on justice.” But often -- too often, commentators said -- such comments as these were heard: “he (Oswald) had it coming” and “it will save the expense of sending him to the electric chair.” A reporter said that among the Dallas crowd outside the police headquarters “there were great cheers…loud ‘yippees’…real Texas shouts.” Around the country reports were heard of citizens suggesting that Ruby, Oswald’s slayer, “should get the Congressional Medal of Honor.” This response was condemned by the press, the clergy, the nation’s leaders. They cried out in appeals for an end to hatred, prejudice, inflammatory statements. It was pointed out that John F. Kennedy had said: “Our nation is founded on the principle that observance of the law is the eternal safeguard of liberty and defiance of the law is the surest road to tyranny.” Said one newspaper: “Thos who applaud the killer on the ground that he gave the suspected assassin his due must share in the disgrace. They do no honor to our late President or to the institutions which President Kennedy ought to uphold.” Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-11E-63-W)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30698 HANDS ACROSS THE BORDER BROWNSVILLE, Texas -- A gift for a new bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church. Suffragan Bishop Leonardo Romero of Mexico, center, receives a communion set from the Rev. Rufus Stewart, left, rector of the Episcopal Church of the Advent, Brownsville, Texas. Looking on is the Rev. Jorge Martinez, rector of the Church of the Ascension at Matamoros, Mexico, the church served by Bishop Romero until his election as suffragan. As suffragan, he will oversee an area of Northeastern Mexico extending south to Tampico, east to Matamoros (opposite Brownsville), and west to Cudad [sic. Ciudad] Juarez (opposite El Paso). "I will be a traveling bishop," he told his Brownsville friends, "ready to hold a communion service wherever the need exists." Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (WRR-BRTEX-3B-64-W)

- Description
- Text transcribed from caption: P-30559 PRESIDENT VISITS OLD TEXAS CHURCH FREDERICKSBURG, Tex. -- President Johnson attends services at a 118-year-old Protestant Episcopal church at Fredericksburg, Tex., not far from the First Family's LBJ ranch. The Rev. Jack Langford, rector of the stone and log St. Barnabas church, bends carefully as he proceeds through the low front door. The congregation, as the chart shows, is only $4,000 short of its $15,000 building fund quota. Interior and exterior views of the old mission church are shown below. President Johnson, a member of the Disciples of Christ, and Mrs. Johnson, an Episcopalian, worshipped at the 30-seat church in early January. At the service the rector acknowledged a gift of new seat cushions from the Johnsons. Credit Must Read: RELIGIOUS NEWS SERVICE PHOTO (W-D-DAL-ZA-64-W)
